On Board Air..What do i Need?

After reading JD's post on his OBA install i now want it in my truck. As of right now i am pretty much stock besides the shackles and coil spacer lift and 30x9.50 all the way around.I have a box full of projects like full set of gauges and cb radio and brake upgrade.but they all will have to wait intil i can build plans for this OBA.

i was wondering what would be the cheap and easy way around it.i would like to be able to air up my tires and run my power tools when i work on my truck since the air compresser i have my house cant handle the power.

Could i be able to fab something from my stock compresser or a York one?
Just looking for some help so i can get started on this build i would like to try to finish it up before monday as i would love to start some more projects but i need my air tools

I would start by seeing where and what size tank you want or can fit.as you know i run a AC compressor but when it burns up i think ill be looking into a York and put a third battery in my box where the old compressor is.to run air tools your need a good size tank and compressor.

But seriously, I have the Super Flow MV-50. I like it. It's pretty quick. I have 32s and it takes about 3 minutes per tire to inflate from 20 PSI to 35-38 PSI. The end needs to be changed to the quick release. Then use your own attachments. I was thinking of getting a smallish tank or two and a pressure switch. I'm hoping I can do it so the compressor will be under the hood, and be able to remove it while keeping the tank pressurized.

If you wanna run air tools you'll need york compressor. A Viair or similar air compressor does not have enough power to run tools. Another option is a CO2 tank.

I can run my impact wrench on my 5 gallon Craftsman compressor for some time before it kicks on. I figure I can get at least three tires from one tank. I plan on installing a bypass switch for the pressure switch so it will be always on in case I need air tools. Then I just have to remember to lat it rest. I wouldn't try and run a die grinder or sand blaster with it. It would such for something that had high pressure and volume requirements. But for something like an impact and maybe a small drill. i think it will work if you ahve patients. Might be wrong, it's happened before.

A York compressor is like $250 reman. This is $90 + $50 for the tank + maybe $100 for pipe, relay/electrics, homemade brackets, gauges and stuff. Less than the compressor alone w/ no pulley.

I agree.i would think you would want at least a 5+gallon tank also.

after writing this post i couldnt sit around and wait nemore so i went on a hunt..i was able to score a york compresser from redmonds just gotta go pick it up on my day off.I told the guy what i was looking for out of the compresser and he said he would take care of me.So we will see where that one goes.

Also was able to score a free air tank from my boss of my company i work for.I am pretty sure it 5 gallons.its one of thoses ones that u hiave to fill on the gauge its goes to 200psi.with a couple of fittings i can score at harbor freight i should be able to use it.

For the location i made my mind up on cuttin the spare tire support out and welding a box in the middle of the open space in between the frame.would it be best to put it in the dead center for weight purpose as its gonna have a batt the tank and some air tools.

JD would u happen to have a diagram on how u ran it?I have no clue on what i need to use or were to start for the install.

All that won't fit where the spare goes.i can tell you that.my box is 32x13x13 and for it to fit you have to find dead center between both crossmembers that the spare tire crossmember mounts to and dead center between the body frame supports not main frame.32 is perfect left to right and 13 is the distance between crossmebers ,the depth is up to you on how low you want it.with you not having a body lift i wouldn't go but 9".put tank farther up under the truck between the gas tank and shock mount crossmember .i can show you pics of exactly of my setup.it is stuff perfectly in the max size for box and tank!!I MEAN STUFFED!!

yea if i could get some pics that would be a big help...i am still stuck on what to usefor the lines and were and what i run them to..But i have only done light searching as i am working 12-14 hour days so i can save for xmas.but if you can help that would be great.thanks

That compressor would melt before it fills that tank up!!hahah maybe prefill before you go out and it may have a chance.and that tank is HUGE!! might as well get there stand up unit and an invertor
