theres enough room on the left side if you want to put it all the way back there

Jason, I was leaning towards the driver side quarter panel area as well. I think i can mount it right next to the 4x4 module

Good luck with that project. I would also prefer the whole OBDII system, I would try very hard to run a 98 5R55E and PCM. The programming can shut off the need for the PATS and special keys, and rear O2's of course.

I'm planning to upgrade my 91 Mark VII some day to a 98 Explorer 302, PCM and 4R70W. I expect to be integrating a few harnesses, the engine bay, engine/trans, and dash harness at least.

Relocating components is a big deal, the resistance and signal of each wire can be affected by big changes. Keep the lengths as short as possible and use as many OEM wires and terminals/connectors as possible. Spare wiring harnesses are treasures for wiring projects like that.

so I had a bonehead moment. I am working on my spreadsheet for all my wiring just now, and the way I work, I just kind of skip around and look at certain sensors and locations and fill it all in overtime. Well, today I came to the crank sensor and here is where I had a lapse of intelligence. I forgot the crank sensor on EEC-IV vehicles go into the EDIS module, and then the EDIS module outputs the PIP signal to the pcm…on second gens, the EDIS module is pretty much built into the EEC-V, and the crank sensor goes directly into the pcm. I am also wondering how to get the tach signal forced into the EEC-V…Not really a big deal, I just now have to run a twisted pair of wires to the EDIS module in the engine bay, which I really didn’t want to have to do, but oh well, if it means I get this working, then ill do it. At least the good thing with square wave duty cycle signals (crankshaft position sensor), distance isn't an issue, LOL. Oh, and on the brighter side of Sears, I am picking up the 5R55E transmission today to bring home, YAY!

Great news everyone, after 5 months of planning, i finally have my 5R55E transmission!!! Woot Woot!!!!!:D:thumbsup:

And also got my wiring spreadsheet almost complete, here's a screen shot:

And an explorer engine bay harness works great for extra wiring!

so how much total do you have invested now?

I havent forgotten about this project, just been dealing with a motor swap in shade, and a root canal lol. So i have everything I need for this project save for two harnesses off a spare a4ld and odds and ends. Also gotta do proper pinouts for connectors c113 and c118 as ford did not include these in the manuals for the 97 model year. Go figure lol. And if i get spare time this weekend (if the signifigant other approves) ill gut Blue out and start running wire to see what my harness should be built around. Then it should only take one evening to actually build the entire harness.

One other thing and I don't recall if you used any of these parts.

Don't use a 97 5R55E or the harness or PCM if you can help it. It's not worth the hassle. 1997 was the first model year for the 5R, and it has a couple of extra sensors in it.

The 98-01 models are not compatible with the 97 parts, none of them. I have a Ford mechanic friend who spent months trying to fix his wife's 97 Explorer trans. Two other later 5R's he tried would not work. He ended up rebuilding the 97 trans, which was burned up and needed almost everything inside replaced. So he used the other trans for parts.

If you have a choice, start a project with a 98-01 5R55E, and the matching harness and PCM. Then you will be able to swap any parts from any of those model years into the project.

Well, the computer and Tranny are 97, and yes, it has a couple of additional sensors on it (overdrive drum speed sensor for example) that became deleted in late 97. But my biggest fear of using 98+ pcms is pats. I know I can get it flashed and pats disabled and what not, but at this point i dont want to invest a lot of money into this project since it isnt proven yet lol. and if This project does fail, at least im not out a whole lot. :) I'm nearing the end of research phase and about to start construction of the harness. But guys, i do appreciate the feedback and opinions and I promise that when this is all said and done, and it doesnt work, you all can line up and tell me 'i told you so' Hehe:p:

I support you and any wild project you come up with. I hope it works, and it could help others too.

I just wanted to point out to anyone else that the 97 5R55E is not compatible as a swap with a 98-01 model. You will do fine with all the same 97 model parts. Just don't try to mix in any 98-01 parts. Regards,

Ah, ok, thats what I thought you meant. Yes, you would be correct sir, and yes, i wouldnt want to mix and match 97 and 98-01 parts when it comes to trannys and pcms. Which is something I was thinking about because i was going to use the 98 harness until i read your post and looked at it, and sure enough, wont work with the 97. Thanks bud!!

I recall speaking with that mechanic friend of mine a few times about his wife's truck. It took at least a couple of months to fix it, he wasn't in a hurry. I enjoy hanging out in the service department there when I can. I learn some tricks sometimes.

Hey Russel i have faith in ya!! be sure to post a video of how it drives when ya get it workin!! im eager to see it

Sign me up! I have a 92 Eddie B that will need a tranny soon. Better new and Blue than old and A4LD.

Better new and Blue than old and A4LD.

I like this!:D. I should retitle this thread with that lol.....that or "Blue's Revenge"

Us Okies are OK! I was born in Tulsa and grew up in Yale. Do you think EX fever is caught in Oklahoma?

Alright fellow forum members, stage 2 has begun...

Tonight I begin building the 5R harness. Photos will ensue later. Wish me luck!!

And side note; my spare bedroom looks like radio shack exploded...
