over heating tranny

my tranny has overheated twice while off road it does fine then all of a sudden the temp jumps up and it starts putting fluid out of the vent or front seal as soon as it cools down it's fine again any help would be a god send it's getting where i'm afaird to take it off road thank you

What engine and tranny, any mods, how many miles, what is the maintenance history, and what is going on when it does this?

it is a 94 xlt 4.0 a4ld auto with 100.000 miles and 31's i changed the trans filter about 4 months ago i have only put about 500 miles on it since then alot of them off road but just easy off roading. It will all of a sudden just get hot and start leaking out fluid from the bell housing and the floor boards get hot as well .It had 3.27s in it but was way to high geared so i just put 3.73s with limited slip in it I'm getting ready to change the tranny filter again because the fluid is a little dark any other help would be great. thanks
