93 explorer with a replacement plastic fuel tank. Previous owner states the gauge worked ok for a time after the replacement. Now with the key on, gauge goes to overfull. I suspect it indicates an open in the circuit. Need to know the physical location of the sending unit ground connection. For now I just reset the trip indicator each time I fill up and then fill up again after 200 miles. If I cannot cure this problem without dropping the tank I will just live with it since I only use the vehicle to do local errands and dropping the tank and it associated skid plate and heat shields looks like more work than I care to do. I realize this problem may already be addressed somewhere else on this site but as a newcomer and on slow dialup (24K at best), I couldn't find anything.

Going by the trip indicator is not a good thing! You do local? Local burns more gas than highway, I dont think you will get 200 out of it! Most maybe 150.But it all depends on the truck

my gauge goes to over full when the sending unit inst connected. i would check the plug near the rear axel on the drivers side

I've been using the trip for at least 2 years with no problem. I do mostly city driving but it varies at times. Within the first month I hit 300 miles on the trip because I wasn't paying attention. It sputtered around a turn but it got me to the gas station. After some maintenance I am able to hit 300 without too much worrying. Not that I do that often, I try to fill up at 200. My problem is the float though.

I used the trip for the first couple months I had my X. It's ok if you know how far you can go on a tank. Mine got about 12 to 13 MPG so I went to about 200 to 220 at one time. Never had a problem with it.

You might want to get you ex looked at.

I get 320 and my miles are mostly in the Seattle suburbs. On the open road I can get over 420 on a tank. I can leave Seattle go 354 miles to Colville Wa. and still have over a 1/4 tank left.

I had that problem on my 91 and all I did was bent out the prongs on the conecters on the plugs on the back of the gage cluster
