How many oxygen sensors does my 4-Door 96 XLT 4.0 have?

AND... if they're not failing should I replace them as part of my pre-4000 miles road-trip tune-up anyway?

You have 3, do not change them unless you have a check engine light code + diagnostic analysis.

Change your idler pulley (very easy). If its original it has a high failure rate. You don't want that to break on a long trip.

It just broke in my driveway (with a terrible racket) so I got that one. Anything else you would recommend?
