Here's the story... 93 Ranger 4.0 4wd, 154,000 miles:

The output shaft on my steering gearbox is shot... the output shaft seal is leaking like a sieve because the bushing is worn out, allowing it to slop around and tear up the seal. I have needed to top it off every second or third gas stop, but Sunday, I added some stop-leak to it, and since then, it's been flowing like a river (a quart and a half in a day and a half!!!). I assume I need a new gearbox... how tough is it to replace it?

Also, does anyone know where I can get a new gearbox both Cheap and Fast (more importantly, Cheap!)???

Thanks, guys...

BTTT... Heeelp?

I could use some tips and tricks from some of the steering experts... I've got the gearbox on order, so any tips, suggestions, comments, etc. would be helpful.

Thanks, gang!

Replacing the gear box doesn't take any special talents. The only special tool you will need is a pitman arm puller. One thing you want to make sure of before you pull the box is to center the steering wheel.

gearbox replacement

As mrboyle said, replacing the gearbox takes no special talents. There are only like 3 bolts holding the box on the frame, the bolt for the steering column, and the pitman arm connection. It is relatively easy. I bought my new box at Autozone because I was in the same boat that you are. I was in desperate need of a box. As you fouund out, the stop leak will not work in that type of situation. When I replaced my box it took me about 40 minutes in the rain and by myself.

That's good to know... with any luck, mine will take an hour or so... I'm planning on replacing the lines too... save trouble later, y'know? Plus, if I mangle them removing them..... I don't even want to think about that....

I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks.

well, the good news is that it's back in. The bad news is that it's a pain in the arse! I've got power steering fluid (aka trans fluid) crustifying in my ear, dirt and grit in every pore between my forehead and my fingertips, and I'm sore as Heck from laying on the concrete (Should've got dad a floor lift for Father's day!). But, at least I know wit's put back together right. Now, all I need to do is stop at Belle Tire in the AM and get it realigned (I had to replace the drag link too... the grease boot on the pittman arm joint was almost gone). I needed to get the tires re-balanced anyhow, so while I'm there I'll have them do that too.

Thanks for the help, gang!
