'03 Sport trac XLT
Hello, i'm truly sorry if i'm reposting and asking the same question that someone else has asked previously, but i desperately need HELP!

I have an 03 sport trac XLT with 90000 miles. the check engine light came on after i got my first oil change after buying the vehicle from carmax at pepboys and i took it to autozone and got the code P0171. just changed all spark plugs. don't think it's the fuel injector problem because i bought some sort of oil to clean it but the light just came back on. i'm guessing it's the MAF sensor or the oxygen sensors. i don't want to be paying tons of money to get someone to fix it.

when i start my vehicle, i started to notice that it would start okay, then sounded like it stalled and then it would start up by itself again. should i not be driving it? is it safe?

how do i change/clean the MAF sensor? i heard it's quite simple, but i don't even know where the MAF sensor is.

what does it mean for bank 1 to be too lean? how do i fix that? please HELP! thanks. sorry, i've just got lots of questions.

Ok, you have a Job 2 Sport Trac. The Job 2 ST's are famous for having a vacuum hose with an elbow to wear out and cause such a problem as you are describing. So please look at the following threads to figure out what vacuum hose they are talking about and check yours for a crack in it that would cause the Too Lean code.

Keep us informed if that's the problem.

The lean condition can be from a vacuum leak or low fuel pressure. Mine turned out to be the fuel pump, pumping under 50psi. Check the vacuum lines first, and the general maintenance items. If nothing turns up from that then see about checking the fuel pressure. From 99 up it needs to be 55-62psi at all times. Regards,

thanks for the help

thanks for the advice and help. i will look into it today and hopefully it can fix the problem. :)

codes also...

Ive got a 2001 sport trac and I'm receiving codes: p0171 and p0174... system running lean. I've changed the fuel and air filters but still have a NASTY rough idle situation and my beauty has even started stalling. I feel the plugs and wires are still in good condition... what might I also start looking for?

Check and clean the IAC, which resides directly below the SOHC shield, as well as the MAF.

Check the fuel pressure, if that's okay then expect it to be a vacuum leak around the upper intake gaskets($8).

Thanks, Guys..

I appreciate the wisdom and tips... I will let you what happens after I do just those things. the rough idle (when in the driver's seat) seems like my truck is 'pumping' along. Vroom, Vroom, Vroom... a fuel pump scare might be a bit much... nevertheless, I'll let you known what your tips provide in a day or so...
