Ok, so I replaced my Battery and Alternator this weekend. Afterwards, I start the truck and it seems fine, drive it down the street and park it in the driveway. This morning I go out and start it (starts up right away) but it idles for ~5 min while I wait for the kids to come out. As soon as I pull away, it starts missing, like I'm running on 7 cylinders. So, I turn around and pull into the garage. I smell a little burning (could be new alternator?) and notice the check engine light is on. So I pull code P0352.

Replacing the alternator required me to remove the Powerdyne blower to get to it. And the plug wires run directly behind it (kind of in the way).

I haven't had a chance to look at it since I'm now at work. (Drove the stang)

Could a loose plug wire cause that or bad coil? Just seems odd that a coil would die, unless I've got a shorted wire or something?

Let me know what you think...

Thanks,
Todd

Ignition coil error code. Will need to replace the coil. Suggest you check your wiring and grounds for corrosion.

Ok thanks, dumb question - which coil pack is "B"? Left or right?

Ok thanks, dumb question - which coil pack is "B"? Left or right?

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe coil secondary "b" to be cylinder 2

The p0 35X codes refer to the secondary circuits of the coil, A being cylinder 1 , H would be cylinder 8

351=Cylinder 1
352=Cylinder 2
353=Cylinder 3
354=Cylinder 4
355=5
356=6
357=7
358=8

and so on for larger engines.

I know our toyota threw p0352 and it was indeed the cylinder 2 coil on plug which was faulty.

Since the coils on our trucks operate in pairs, and there is only one coil secondary code, I suspect a burned spark plug wire is the issue.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks Turdle! Hopefully, that's all it is.

Don't disagree that may be a bad plug wire, but usually they throw off a cylinder misfire code rather than a coil pack code. Anyway, check through the plug wire and the coil pack should find the issue fairly quickly.

Yep, will do when I get home. Thanks Romeoville!

Ok, so small update - the PO had a remote start / alarm installed. Well, they tapped into the Red/blu stripe wire on the right coil pack. Anyway, the wiring was not tied up and shorted to the drivers side header. So, I repaired that wiring and tied it up out of the way. Truck now starts fine, but it is still missing, and not throwing any codes.

Anyone know what the Red/ blue stripe wire is?

I'm guessing it could have hurt the coil pack?

Any other ideas?

And #2 plug wire is just fine..

Ok, so another update.

I pulled out the old Haynes manual to check the coils.

Primary Resistance on right coil pack was .3 ohms on the red/blu to +, and .6 ohms on the other side.

Secondary resistance on right coil 3&5 was 12.9k, 1&6 was 12.8k

Primary Resistance on left coil pack was .6 ohms , and .6 ohms on the other side.

Secondary resistance on left coil 4&7 was 12.8k, 8&2 was 12.8k

According to the Haynes specs, both of those coils are over on the secondary resistance, and the right one is borderline on the primary resistance...

I guess I could replace them both, just not sure ..?

any other ideas?

Was the resistance reading on the red-blue wire with the connector connected?

If so, disconnect the coil pack connector and re read the resistance(s) please.

( I hope the PCM didn't get shorted out)

All readings were with no wires connected.

PCM is my fear also....

Going to put new coils in tonight and see what happens.

Ok, I replaced both coils with new Motorcraft ones from Rockauto.

Engine is purring like a kitten!

Interesting to note is that the new coils measured .6 and 13k. So my guess is that only one of my coils (the one with the .3 reading) was bad. They were both so rusty when I took them off that I just had to replace them.

Test drive tomorrow, but it's night and day difference.

Time for a cold one and to do some homework with the kids.

Thanks guys for the help!

I'll report back tomorrow after the test drive.

Ok, drove to work and no issues.

Thanks guys
