Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

I've had this for a while now.
First time it happend, cleared code. Came back 6-7 days later.
Cleared code, replaced O2 bank 2 sensor 2. About 2 weeks later, code came back.
Replaced bank 2 sensor 1 (I had new spares lying around), about 2 weeks later code came back again.

So, definately need to get the cat replaced, and most likely get the 2 rear cats removed completely.

Anywho, main question is this: is this something that I should get done ASAP, or just something that I can live with for a little while?

hmm... those links didn't post right :p:

I'm pretty sure that's all it can be... right?
Bank 2 would be driver's side... no exhaust leaks from what I can tell. Idle and drive is fine. Of course I have the infamous EGR-leak tick, but that's on the pass. side which would be bank 1.

edit: so my CEL came on either yesterday or Tuesday... can't remember exactly. But then today on my way home, right after I gassed up, the CEL went off. Strange.

...Fixed it...:biggthump

...That first link shows another possibility..:dunno:

thanks :biggthump
I'll check it out.

I've already replaced both bank 2 O2 sensors with new units, so link 2 would be out.

as for the CMP doodley, the thread died... 11 months ago, with no note of wether or not that cleared the P0430 issue, sadly.

buuuuuuuut... I s'pose this would be a good time for me to try out these other OBD2 scanning softwares I got installed on my laptop... the one I got from from obd2.com (CarCode) I never could get the data logging or real-time stuff to work :dunno:

although, this is a good excuse to get a good exhaust... just if I had the money for TMH!

...Yea...I thought originally that second thread was the original but I'll leave it for future readers...

...The link in post #6 is what I remember...410fortune posted that that is a generic code and somewhere on here is what to look for on a 97 5.0...That is where the first link comes into play and IIRC, that was the whole problem which he resolved with that fix......Did that make any kind of sense???...lol...:D

haha yes, it makes sense. In a twisted confusing sort of way :D

I'll dig around and see if I can't find that thread you speak of.

...Or you could contact 410fortune and have him join you in this thread...Then we would have a good thread for the problem and the fix...;)

well after more reading, I'm wondering if it IS the camshaft synchronizer?

I've had a bad squeek for a while... at first, it was a quick chirp only at startup.

then a couple weeks ago, it was consistent.

trying to determine where it came from, I woulda swore it was one of the idler pulleys.

replaced both. Upper idler definately needed replacing, as the bearing was toast, but no noise. Lower idler was perfect; spun great, but replaced anyway.

I ended up picking up a new belt tensioner assy, thinking that may be it.

But then I found the thread with a video of the camshaft synchro squeak (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161590&highlight=squeak)

that sounds like the same exact squeak/chirp/squeal I've been hearing.

Oddly though, my truck hasn't made any noises over the last couple days.

maybe why my CEL turned off? Going to investigate into this, and pick up a new camshaft synchro from Carquest as long as it's a US-made (Carquest usually sells a lot of Cardone stuff, not sure what they have that's Dorman or Balkamp)

and maybe that will even help my idle a bit? not that's it rough, but it's far from smooth.

..:shifty_ey ...Shhh, Don't let your X hear you are going to work on her or she won't show any problems and will wait till you are far from home to break down...lol...

...Intermitent problems are the worst as they will tend to be a cause of one thing but will make something else throw a code...

...But I think you are on the right track...When I have these shady problems I tend to replace all the iffy parts and concider it as preventative maintenance...Good luck with this...

I'm pretty sure she's already realized she's a gold-digger.

I'm just glad I'm single, or it'd be like having 2 girlfriends! :bsnicker:

well I just verified there is noise coming from the synchro with my stethescope.

but... gonna be a while before I work on it. No way in hell I'm workin on my junk when it's 1* out. brrrrrrrrrrrrr

...Yea, my dog, she don't complain...:D

...and I hear you on the cold...It may not even make it to 60* today as we have a snow storm blowing over...Brrrrr....:p:

the avg temp this last summer was right around 60*, if not less. bah.

although... I'm still curious as to how the cam synchro can cause a P0430, seeing as how the 2 are pretty un-related

...Electronic control, don't you just love it???

...When something stutters, something else steps...One fault is met by a compensation which usually will cause a compensation for another...The computer is trying to update for a minor problem which starts a chain reaction...

...Thats why this Forum is so great as you would spend hours and major bucks trying to chase something the computer keeps reacting to....

There are way better answers on here but I think you get the message...:D

true... it kinda makes sense, but kinda doesn't.

since the computer is saying the cat is bad, which is only because of the difference between front and rear H02 sensors. And it's only saying one cat is bad, instead of both.

I dunno... CEL hasn't come back on yet. Carquest can't get the synchro, so looks like I'll be gettin it from either Rockauto or FastPartsNetwork, and hopefully doing the job next weekend if I can find a garage to borrow.

...If the cmp has the correct voltage the computer thinks it's working correctly, even if it's out of alignment...Which if it is off, the computer is compensating for it thinking everything is ok...:dunno:

...But honestly, I can't find the threads I was looking for and I still say check with 410fortune ...;)
