P0745

Was hoping an expert on these transmissions would chime in. Mine is due for the third time as its started to slip, but I have the same quesstion if changing the valve (done once, then a second time on the full rebuild in 2019) is the answer. Not liking the idea of another 2500$ rebuild.

I hear you. There's no way I could justify that with mine. So I'm about 85% through dropping the transmission now. Just transmission lines, harness, and bell housing bolts left. Hasn't been too hateful short of one exhaust bolt needing cut out. Again, I still don't really know what I'm doing when I crack it open. I think just hoping I'll be able to visually identify what the problem is. But for the price of a rebuild kit vs estimated repair cost at a shop, I feel like i gotta try it. Fingers crossed lol.

I think just hoping I'll be able to visually identify what the problem is.
Some tranny parts are easy to identify as bad, some valve body parts are not.
But a common problem with these transmissions are the worn servo bores.
I would think it's possible to identify if bores are worn.
This fix is expensive

The cheaper way

The P0745 could be caused by this issue.

regards

Agreed, thank you so much for that info. I think I now remember coming to that possible conclusion the first time I looked at this. Very much describes my issue. I just got the transmission finally dropped last night, so I'll be digging into it later today hopefully. I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy the "cheap fix" along with the master rebuild kit in rock auto and how for the best. I'm thinking it should include just about everything I need.

Rock auto pops up with a recommendation to replace torque converter as well when putting the rebuild kit in the cart. Is this really necessary?

Back on the servo bores

On a rebuilt transmission… can the sleeves be seen from below with out disassembly?

Mine was rebuilt 2019, the shop that did it was hoping I’d still not have the vehicle to challenge their won’t fail again guaranteed, but we’ve got the 5 not engaging

I’m asking this ahead of buying the intermediate fix kit and doing it myself

The sleeves only can be seen if the servo covers and servo pistons are out.
Maybe there is the catalytic converter and a heat shield in front of the servo covers,
so not easy to get the servo cover snap rings out.

Is there anything additional that should also be replaced that may not be included in a rebuild kit? So far I have the master rebuild kit (which has all the seals, gaskets, 2 bushings, clutch plates, bands and a filter), torque converter, transmission fluid, and assembly lube. Then from the site you sent, the servos, the recommended square socket, and another tube of their assembly lube. Anything I'm missing?

You mean the fix on this side?

Be shure to watch the video and download the installation pdf file.
The new servo pistons with o-rings are a temporary fix, o-rings will wear too.
Band adjustment is requiered after this procedure.
Hope the bands are still in good shape.

Such a kit mostly have all needed parts. I am not a tranny expert and can only tell about my own 5R55E rebuild.

Anything I'm missing?
Would also change these parts, not a must but maybe a good decision for the future.
-sprag
-speed sensor
-rear servo piston
-pump flow control valve (sonnax)
-valve body o-ringed end plug kit (sonnax)
-bypass thermoelement fix

There might be some other parts you will identify as bad while disassembling the transmission.
No "tranny guru" on board?

Well, didn't take long to hit a snag.

In the video I'm watching of a tear down of this transmission, the guy pulls the inner shaft almost all the way out, allowing him to smack it with a mallet while pulling and applying pressure on the outer shaft. My problem is my inner shaft doesn't want to slide out. Is there something I'm missing? Or is there another way to remove this cover?

The shaft should slide out easy, there is nothing that grab the inner shaft.
Any kind of a little slide out and stops there? Maybe the bushing stops the shaft.

For the pump a puller tool is needed.

Or such a tool

These guys know what they are talking about.

Did you get the repair manual?

Does not slide out easy. Has zero in and out play. Tried light to moderate taps with a light rubber mallet. Nothing. The second video your sent is the one I'm using for the teardown. He does it without a puller or slide hammer. But again, his inner shaft slides right out. Not sure why mine isn't.

But his inner shaft do not slide out completely, so he is tapping on the shaft and wiggle it. At the assembly video he also has problems to get the shaft in again, i think the inner brass bushing is the issue. I would take a puller to get the whole pump assembly and shaft out.

Right, he's able to slide it out enough to be able to get better swings with a dead blow without the transmission case being in the way. Mine doesn't move. I don't have a puller and apparently neither do any of my buddies. So another expense to the now roughly $750+ rebuild. I'm beginning to look into junk yard transmissions. For around $130, even with the uncertainty of not knowing whether it would work or not, it still seems like the more appealing option currently. Like my buddy said, it would be better to have the money to do it a second time if need be than not have the money. And it isn't like I'm certain a rebuild would fix it or I'd even get it right in the first place. Rebuild still not out of the question, but I'm leaning more this way now I think.

Tranny from a junk yard would have the same issues, maybe more issues. I would do the rebuild with all that issues Hiram is talking about. So you know what you are doing and you know which parts are going in. My opinion

Even being less than a 5th of the price? If I get a junk yard transmission and it doesn't work, I could still afford a rebuild. Just out 130. If i spend 750+ on a rebuild and it doesn't work, I'm not sure I'd be willing to spend the money to try again.

Late update. Got the transmission disassembled a little over a week ago. Personally, I don't know enough of what I'm looking at to know what may or may not be bad. I do however notice some slight damage to the case. First, just some light marking up close to the bell housing, probably not a huge deal. But after that, I noticed what looks like stress fractures on the back "wall" and thought that may be more problematic.

Currently, I'm looking at pulling a transmission from local junkyard tomorrow, but was going to save this transmission rather than giving it up for core refund, just in case the junkyard transmission doesn't work and I still decide to rebuild. I figured I'd just rebuild the one I already have tore apart, but more I'm debating of this case needs junked.

As always, any input is appreciated.
