1998 Mountaineer 5.0 AWD
Okay, so I've done some searching over the last couple days on this and I haven't really gotten any helpful information (from what I can tell) about this.

1998 Mountaineer AWD 5.0 hooked up to a 4R70W. "O/D OFF" lamp started flashing at me a few days ago on the way home from work. Stopped at Wal-Mart on the way home for 15 minutes, maybe. Started back up, no light. Got me to work and back fine over the past few days without the light being on, but I have noticed that I don't get TCC lock-up anymore. 70-75 on the highway, engine runs at about 2800-3400 which is a big difference from what it normally does (about 2k @ 70). Snap-On Verdict says P1728: Transmission Slip Error. I've done my homework on just the code alone, and it seems the most common fix is to just throw a whole new transmission at it. I checked the harness and solenoids on my lunch break today and everything seemed to be okay. Changed the fluid and filter while I was in there, and adjusted the bands. Didn't really see any evidence of mechanical breakdown, just some dirty brown fluid- smelled like ATF should, and didn't feel nasty or gritty.

My biggest issue at this point is that the cost of gas isn't going down anytime soon, and my commute to and from work is mostly highway miles.
SO: Short of tossing a trans and converter in and hoping that fixes everything, are there any other things I can look at without disabling my daily driver?

Thanks in advance,
SD
