I decided that I should repaint that black trim on the rear hatch today, I started off repairing the paint where my taillights rubbed through the paint and caused rust then just kept going.

I started by taping everything off then sanding the pitted area, should have taken before pics, sorry...

I figured that I should use primer to cover the bare area, so it got a couple coats then satin black. Both in rattle cans.

Looks pretty good other than a couple sags, I am no painter.

I am going to do the doors tomorrow if I have time before golf...:D

did the very same thing to mine but have used hammered paint. Looks a bit different - cause everything on my truck looks and feels different.

Now ya just got to get the doors!

The only thing that bugs me, is that we can paint and paint and paint the trims and keep them looking good, but what the hell are we to do about the rubber trim? Like around the windows?! I hate those, they look so weathered and aged on all of the first gens now

Most protectants are temporary. You really have to find aftermarket replacements, if available. Fifteen years of environmental exposure will kill anything.

Nice, did you clear coat them afterward?

I need to repaint my side columns between the pillars too on my 3gen.

I believe that the 1 and 2 gen explorer columns had just flat black on them from the factory. My 3gen has a gloss on the pillars, matches exactly the black paint of the body.

I think my project of repainting my side pillars black with a nice gloss will be difficult, if I want them to match the black paint of the body exactly, like from the factory.

Do you think a nice dark black with a glossy clear coat is possible with rattle cans?

When I repaint my pillars I need them to match as close a possible to the black body paint, any tips on a nice dark black with a glossy clear coat would be helpful!

I would get some factory matched paint, that's what I have been doing for the areas that I have been touching up such as where the clear had peeled off of the top of the passenger side door, and under the tail lights... I used satin black trim paint for the back pillars and will be using the same for the black areas on the doors. (no clear) I would think (anyone please comment here) that if you sprayed clear over a satin or flat color it then would become glossy.

I have the same problem with my black fading. However does anyone remember that the explorers from the early 90's had black stickers instead? My black seems to be wearing off o the rounded edges only. What do you think about getting the black stickers for the 94 and putting them on? Cheesy?

I didn't know about the stickers, to be honest the paint job only took 3 hours or so. I did do the doors and the driver's side mirror, the paint wrinkled on the mirror in a couple places but it still looks better black than it did as grey.

I also fixed a rust spot under the mirror and painted the top of the back door where the clear had rotted off.:D

Now all I need is to paint the pass side mirror and build a bumper... and shackles and F-150 spring perches, and 31's and and...
