Do you want it gloss or flat?

That makes a big difference in how much prep and cost you have to deal with. Gloss black will high light every imperfection. I mean everything. Flat or satin finishes mask imperfections. So if you don't care about perfect, it's fairly cheap and less work.

If you do want gloss, every nick, ding, wave, and scratch must be taken care of. There is a right way and then there is all the wrong ways to do it. Care should be taken from the very start so you don't miss any of them. Then you have to have a completely dust free environment to spray the paint, which will be a two stage paint system. Flat you can get away with single stage, but it won't last as long.

Decide what you can afford in cash and time, then I can point you in the right direction.

id like flat no gloss but im very confident in my inability to paint very well. i can come up with atleast 700$ or so would that get me a decent paint job at a shop? and what kinda stuff could i do to maybe get it cheaper than that?

My dad has had a shop for years-- you can make it cheaper by removing all the "excess" things yourself- Bumpers, antenna, ect-- also talk to the shop- maybe you can help by hand sanding for them, or other tasks that you would be able to do. Normally a cheap paintjob comes in at $1800 because paint alone can run 300+ a gallon. It also depends if you want basecoat/clearcoat or just paint.

that sucks man... that's more than the car is worth damn. :thumbdwn:
i love my car but it looks like its burgundy for me not shelling out that much

I had a quote of about $2000 for my 2 door sport and thats with me doing most of the prep work. Removing trim, weatherseal, lights, bumpers, grill, and glass would all be seperate.

Thats a color change with a cut-in, and no interior to mask off, with the black two tone on the bottom.

Yikes, I knew that painting would be expensive, but that much is damned scary. Looks like I'll be looking into investing in the equipment to do it myself!

I rusto'd my 92 smoke gray from that gnarly two tone tan/brown by sanding and rolling it. It's definitely not a show truck but looks way better than it did. I also sprayed bed liner on the roof. Looks sweet. Black pro comp wheels, smoke gray body, black, bed lined roof. I like it. 'bout 100 bucks for paint and supplies. Legit

got any pics of it?

idk where you guys are getting quotes, but that is ####ing way to high.
the place i planned on dropping my explorer out at is extremely reputable they paint robby gordons trophy trucks, camburgs trucks and so on. for a single stage choice of over 1200 colors, painting door jams, under the hood, and all body work is 700 dollars.

here is some of the work to show its not some hack stuff

I don't know about a $700 paint job that includes everything. Base coat alone is over $300 a gallon, clear too. I haven't priced single stage, but I'm sure it's about the same price as base coat.
