2002 Explorer XLT 4.0L V6
Hi, I have a 2002 XLT explorer. My front passenger window was forced to open repeatedly by my loving wife (when it was frozen in -20 weather) and now it won't go up or down. I removed the paneling to at least expose enough of the window in the door to manually push it up. I can hear the motor and stuff grinding, may even be broken glass (although no cracks are visible on the glass) or plastic. The reason I can't see all is because there is more stuff I probably need to get behind (metal 1/2 inch bolts and crash bars that go horizontally from A pillar to B, etc.). Do I need to remove all this stuff because currently I only see half of the window to the right. Don't know how else I can describe this but perhaps others have pics or suggestions on what to remove (further).

So, the switch and electrical seems ok.
Motor seems to be humming.
The panels are removed completely. I am staring at the metal door on the inside.
What next besides taking to the dealer which I am thinking to do now.

Thanks all.

The window motors have plastic things in them so they will mess up before it powers and breaks the window. I would take the window motor our and inspect it from there.

There have been threads about this before. I am not sure if it is the same problem that the first gens have but if it is then Burns is correct. The same problem has happened to no less than six different windows of mine on my various Ford Explorers listed in my sig. I just clean out all the plastic bits and peices and the old grease with brake cleaner, add in three metal hex nuts that are just the right size to fit in without moving a lot, regrease and reassemble.

How do I get to the motor? I removed the paneling but still don't see the motor. thx.

Hey Cloaked, greetings from the east side of town.

Homesforsale: I have a couple of pdf files that show how they are disassembled. One is for the door latches and the other is for the window and motor. They are both for the '03 model year but should be the same. Send me a PM with your email address if you want copies.

Its been awhile since I have done it, so somebody please correct me if I am wrong. There are I think three rivets you have to drill out and then the motor bracket will be movable. There will already be holes in the door which you can line up the motor with to stick in a torx bit(?) in to unbolt the motor (three bolts) from the bracket. It will be pretty much self explanatory from there. When you are ready to put to motor back in, if you cant put new rivets in, just use three bolts and nuts to hold it back on. Make sure to face the bolts out, and when you have it all tightened, you can grind off the excess so your door panel fits on. The reason you want the bolts facing out is so they dont block the window from working.

I haven't been into the window motors on my 02 but most of the other fords I have worked on have 3 indentations you drill out and then you have access to the bolts in the motor underneath.
It is pretty common for those little plastic/nylon? rollers to wear out.I have made my own out of plastic coathangers and other things on hand if I was in a pinch, for a temporary fix but they aren't very expensive if you just buy the replacements.I have used metal on a couple occassions until I could get the right parts but I wouldn't use metal for a permanent replacement because if the rollers doesn't have some give when it gets in a bind it can break a window or something.

Pics, perhaps you can help with window

Here are some pics once I remove the paneling. What is remaining is crimped to the whole door. Removing the visible screws will just allow me to remove the motor with no access due to the sheetmetal in front. What are my next steps if I want to diagnose this window further. I can tell that the steel wires are off the track and stuff but my frustration is once again how do I proceed forward? Feel free to edit the image, draw arrows, whatever.

Thx.

Thanks Cloaked. Here is the link to the pic. How do I get behind the painted sheet metal. It is physically crimped to the whole door unless I am missing something.

The weather must have warmed up a little in Chigago.:D That's as much as you're gonna be able to 'see' what you're doing. That's why I sent ya the pdf files that show where everything is located. You have to get a pic in your mind and then feel your way thru. If necessary I'd say open up the other front door so you can see what it looks like when working correctly.

What rrgone said. I cant help you anymore because I only have experience on the window motors on a first gen.
