First off, the window will sometimes move, sometimes just make noise. Is this typical when the window motor bushings go bad?

Second, how hard is it to replace the motor and/or regulator, if needed?

Thanks all, this is on my "new" 1996 XLT.

FYI I took the motor out and the bushings (or "gear plugs") were bad. $5 later the motor is working perfectly.

Taking the motor out and replacing the plugs was a cinch.

Question to someone who knows. Ive only ever taken out the complete window regulator assembly with motor in place. I replaced one x-frame not too long ago...but now I'm getting a "popping that I assume are the three gear plugs gone bad. I keep hearing about taking just the motor out, which I've never done. I am good with the theory of it, but just want to be sure, the regulator stays put when you remove the motor and lets you keep your fingers?
