Hello this is my first post, i bought an 01 sport trac that had only 1 key but had a remote starter installed, there was a blank key taped to the steering column. the question i have is that since that blank key allowed the truck to start without the original key wouldnt the blank key be already programmed and all i would need to do is have it cut for the ignition???? any info would be great

My guess is...no. I assume that what you mean by a blank key is a key that came with the non factory remote start. I THINK that even though the remote start works, that it still needs to be programmed and become a "smart" key to work with the factory anti theft ignition.

I would check three sources to verify. The installer of the remote start kit, a Ford dealership and a certified locksmith.Good luck...and let us know!

Have it cut and try it.

What do you have to lose?

I will try and have it cut, the original install was such a poor installation I had to remove it. It caused too many problems. I am going to have a new remote starter installed and I just need to know if I could use a cloned key to program a pats bypass module or do I need 2 keys to get it done.

You will have to have two working keys and then they will program with a bypass module

Yeah but if I have the key cut wouldn't that give me 2 with the same id? I'm going to be installing a key override all module. The instructions say I need 2 keys, would this still work???

If you cut the blank key, it *will* work. You may get some resistance from places cutting a RFID key though, since they don't want to be responsible if the chip breaks with vibration.
I paid walmart for their blanks in return to cut my blanks that I brought in.

I would get a third blank with a chip in it, cut that also, and then program it in with the first two keys that work.

i agree - the blank key was to satisfy the pats requirement for the remote starter - so it should be programmed already - it was left uncut because if someone broke into the car, they could not use the key in the ignition

if you are having another remote starter installed, it sounds like a good idea to use another blank key that is programmed - unless they have a better way to get around pats
