I just read the PATS thread and I understand how it works but I can't find the answer to my question.

I have a 2001 Explorer Sport SOHC, I am going to be replacing the PCM tomorrow. Is there a way to program my key to work with the new/used PCM?? Or must it go to a dealer??

Also if by chance if I can get the ignition switch and key from the 2001 Explorer that I am getting the PCM from would that work.

I know you don't want to hear "I thinks", but I think the replacement PCM will not recognize the key without being told to by Ford Dealer. Someone else here will know FOR SURE. Mebbe they'll say....

I believe the "key" here is that if you use the key with the PCM that worked before, that pair of parts will work together in any like vehicle. The ignition switch itself (or more correctly, the lock-set) does not interact in the PATS scheme. imp

I didn't know what it was called (lock set) thanks for correcting me. I'm not 100% sure I can get the key though.

So I just talked to a locksmith and he claims he can program a key for me to work with the new PCM. Has anyone tried this??

take 2 keys

cycle key 1
cycle key 2

after you install the new pcm this should work if it fails, it needs to be programed.

At the moment I only have one key.

PATS keys

I just had two keys programmed for my Sport by a locksmith since I only got one PATS key when I purchased the vehicle. First the locksmith cut two keys to match my original key. Then he hooked a machine up to the OBDII port for about 10 minutes to program an additional key. Once he had two good keys he used them and my PCM to program the third key in about 15 seconds.

If you get a new PCM and reuse your old keys then it just takes two programming cycles to get two PATS keys compatible with your new PCM. Obtaining a key with the PCM doesn't help unless the ignition cylinder lock is rekeyed to match. If you do that, then your door keys will be different than your ignition keys. The locksmith can come to your vehicle to reprogram the keys.

Thanks for your response I didn't want to get my hopes up and then find out he couldn't program the key for the new PCM. He did tell me that he would have to cut a new key so I was expecting that. I wasn't too concerned with my igintion key being different than my door locks because they already are so I am going to see if he can make me a door key also.

Scanner not connecting to PCM to reveal transponder code

I called a locksmith to program a new key after my keys were stolen and his computer keeps say failed to connect.i have new ignition and keys but can't program key to work.

Any ideas why?

Never had any problems with PCM except airbag light comes on periodically and flashes.last year emissions couldn't read one test but it worked after he changed cords on his pc.
