Can I put an ecm from a 97 explorer into a 98 and do away with pats if they are comparable models ie 5.0 all wheel drive?

You shouldn't need pats or the gem if you use a non pats ecm and rewire if neccesary. Was wondering if anyone has tried it--is the gem wired only to the ecm to send it an "ok to start" signal?
I was doing a search for the location of the pats module so I can do a swap with a coded key and module and came across a thread for HENSON PERFORMANCE that said he can sell you the xcal2 and tune it to turn off the pat system problem with that is its 300 plus some change! so for that reason im out!
have to keep searching for the info and try it my way!
