I own a 1992 Explorer XL and I allready have a K&N air filter (cone style) on it. I am going to be putting JBA cat-forward headers, Dynomax hi-flow catalitic converter and a flowmaster force II exhaust on. I am wondering if anyone knows what kind of fuel milage and horsepower gains I should expect from such a set up.

Your headed in the right direction. My best hwy mpg went from 20 to 22 with a K&N, cut air box, and dual exhaust. Since you are adding headers and a high flow converter, you should do a little better. As far as gains, I would guess I freed up 15 to 20 hp. I can now leave 20ft black marks. I also suggest changing to synthetic fluids. This will increase gas mileage some more.

looking at the model of explorer your working with....same as mine 92 4.0 liter..

the things i've done....include
k&N drop in filter and Flowmaster non delta 40 series.
with these 2 things i get about 16 in the city and about...about 20 on the highway...no bad for a 92...

also the early model explorers are , and i love my 92 to death....but well they are "unbelieveably" slow....just overall its gonna take a lot to make it really GO but from what you plan on doing sounds like it could be promising.

also you can't really compare to rtstorks truck because his is a 99 so naturally a newer truck is going to get a little bit better milage per gallon than an older one..
no too mention as well...a 5.0 Liter...so the milage he's getting is quite good!!!

see ya,
ryan

Ive jumped up to 16 mpg city with new plugs, magnecor wires, cut air box w/K&N, hi flow cat and exhaust and switch to Amsoil 5-30. My highway sucks b/c going 80-85 blows mpg right out the window. When I am normal 60-70 I hover in the 21-23 range. I am quite happy.
