I have a 99 explore E.B. 5.0. I want to install a shift improver kit, and a performance chip. what are the advantages and disadvantages. Any information on other ideas are welcome.

Go with a chip first, and be sure to go with Apten. The chip's reprogram of the shift points and firmness might be all you need/want.

Good luck.....

Personally, the biggest issue with changing the chip is spending extra cash for premium gas and with today's $2 per gallon prices, well...

Performance wise, its a good buy.

Where would i find this performance chip?
Thanks for the info.

Furthermore, to get the most from a chip, you will need to modify the intake ( KKM ) as well as a cat back exhaust.

that's exactly why we have the dual program chips, so you can run both 87 and premium :)

actually- i would buy the baumann shift kit first. nothing i have done to my truck has made nearly the difference the baumann kit on stage 3 has done (although if your stock 'd stick with stage 2 for now)

How does that work- with 87 you have no performance gain (like stock) and when you switch the chip to accept premium you have performance gain?

in 87 you get better shifts, some economy improvments, removed speed limiters, tweaked a/f ratio, removal of torque reduction, and some small performance gains (probably 5-8hp).

Then performance you get all of that plus a timing curve to give you much more power for use with premium gas.

plus some guys see a HUGE gains with both programs. I will let a small secret out of the bag that I previsouly didn't want competitors to know :)

Some 96-99 explorers start in 2nd gear from the factory. That means if they floor it from a stop the truck always starts in second. I can't get into why it was done from Ford this way, but it was. Can you imagine what those guys feel like when they get an extra gear with a chip?

Wow, that's good to know. Having the Chip is sounding pretty good now, thanks.

mine did this from the factory!

when i put the shift kit in is when it stopped...

maybe your chips are better (and they probably are) but neither my old hypertech pp3 or my custom chip fixed this problem on their own (although the custom one might have because i already had the baumann in when i got it)

My god...

What X's ar ethe ones that start in second gear? 5.0's? I've heard of Lincoln LS's starting in second gear, but never X's...

I've been seriously considering the chip and this would jsut be another plus that it fixed for buyers with non-frist gear X's...haha.
