Almost every time I shift into Reverse, I get a "ping" sound. Like the drive shaft was hit with a wrench. I sometimes get the sound shifting into drive as well.

The first thing I thought was U-Joints, but I've checked them all. They are tight and lubed up pretty good. The drive shaft does not move when you try to spin it by hand. There is nothing that could be contacting it either.

Last weekend I had my friend listen from outside the truck while I put it in gear. He said he didn't hear it, but I did. So I got out of the truck and told him to do it. This time I didn't hear it, but he did. So I walked over to the door and had him do it again. That time we both heard it.

So it can only be heard when inside the truck. It's something I've never encountered before, I have no Idea what it could be. There are only ropes, tow straps, tire chains and regular chains in the back. (Besides my amp with no speakers lol.) So it's nothing moving around in the back. The only thing I can come up with is that the sound is coming from inside the transmission somewhere. Hopefully it's nothing to be worried about.

Any ideas?

I'll go out tomorrow and record a quick video so you can hear what it actually sounds like. It's like smacking two small cinder blocks together except its a slightly lower tone.

(EDIT) [This has been going on for a long long time, I've just not given it much thought until recently.]

Sounds like normal engaging operations. Video should help some

Does it make the sound as soon as you put it in reverse or drive, or does it happen when you start to roll? you might want to check to see if your hubs are making the sound.

Yep as soon as it engages the gear. I've been tied up all day, I'll see if I can shoot one real fast before it gets too dark.

I recorded on my phone, so it's basically crap. If you are using speakers with a lot of bass, turn it down so you can hear.
Today it seemed the noise was more prominent when going into drive. I drove it 3 separate times today so it's not like it was sitting for very long.

yea i have that same noise with my 92 sport 2wd i wouldent worry about it its been going on since i bougt it it kinda feels like someone ligtly hit your bumper right?

Yeah, it gives a little nudge when going into gear. I knew that part was normal, I've driven a lot of automatics. I guess It's just normal engagement noises, thanks for the feedback though.

I'm hoping it starts raining soon so I can go on a good romp in the mud lol.

i hear ya:D
