PISSING tranny fluid after adding!!! HUH?

CDW, you would have thought that Ford would abandon this transmission altogether, then.

I KNOW it had a BAD reputation...so then design a new transmission!!! WTF?

I'm a Ford FREAK...but they make some DUMB moves...all this does is piss people off...and a lot of those pissed off customers are LOST customers.

This isn't to say, of course, that GM or Chrysler doesn't have it's share of garbage trannies, either.

I just CAN NOT believe that out of 3 American vehicles, I've had bad trannies on EVERY one. My Jeep Wrangler has had THREE transmissions....the FOURTH I just took out and is sitting on my bench until I get the cash to have her rebuilt. Unbelievable. I BABY my vehicles, too.

Yes I know that the $400 retail price is a lot. With what ever you might find it for you can gain good improvements in power and economy, as well as the trans things. You can have the shift points reset, change the shift quality, top speed, etc.

FYI, the trans in your wife's Explorer, that is a descendant of the AOD, also considered very bad in the early 80's.

The guts inside of the AOD are larger and thus stronger for a V8. The A4LD began as a 4 cylinder trans, it has lighter internal parts so it will not ever be a great heavy truck transmission.

FORD won't do this?

I NEED to stop by Advance Auto and have them check for codes. I was told that I could have codes even though my CEL isn't on.

I actually worked at my local Advance a few years ago...THE most FRUSTRATING job I've EVER had...more than my 4 years in the military.

Why? 2 words. GENERAL MOTORS. I swear to God.

Between GARBAGE GM diesels in our boats (I was a boat engineer in the Coast Guard, i.e. diesel mechanic) and GM parts at Advance, the mere existence of GM made my life and the people I worked with MISERABLE.

I will NEVER buy a GM product, EVER. My parents will never buy GM again, either, after 2 lemon Grand-Ams and a death-trap Blazer.

CDW, REALLY?!!!

That Explorer is the BEST vehicle we've ever owned...the transmission started to slip maybe once every 3 days, no kidding.

I added Lucas transmission stop slip (I HATE snake oil, and I HATE Lucas) but it worked...no more slips.

Yeah, I really do like the shifting characteristics of that tranny.

When people are talking FORD transmissions and they mention AOD are they implying A4LD, for example?

I've seen this a lot, and have always wondered.

That Explorer has 200,000 miles on it and has just as much power as the day it was new. I LOVE the 5.0...although the 351W is my all-time favorite motor.

No the AOD is from 1980, and it was improved as years past. The A4LD is s tiny transmission, the AOD is medium in size.

When it became the AODE it got a better OD band etc, and the 4R70W gained a few things, finally with a mechanical diode in 98. Do a VB kit for it and keep the fluid changed.

The rebuilt A4LD in my '88 Ranger had a LOT of work done to it...shift kit plus a LOT of other mods, tranny cooler, etc. I don't know what other mods...it was 7 years ago and the motor blew shortly after the trans rebuild with 273,000 miles on her (2.9L).

I have that Ranger in storage...it is MINT, so I won't get rid of her. My favorite truck, by far, besides dad's '53 F100. Red paint, black interior.

A guy my dad's comapny uses runs a high performance transmission shop who did the work. Didn't feel anything like the original tranny when he was done.

Yeah, but Brooklyn, (do you mind me asking what your name is, I'm Anthony) I can't see spending $400 on a re-flash...if that's the case, and I'm not harming the tranny, I'll just deal with it!!!

Where in Brooklyn are you? I grew up in North Jersey, Bergen County, my family still lives there as well as Hoboken. Dad works in Manhattan.
My name is Michael. I live a few blocks away from Brooklyn College. As for the tune, contact WWW.HensonPerformance.Com.
