I was wondering if there was any way to repair a rock pitted windshield.

The other day I took a rock to the windshield from some inconsiderate fool who cut me off on the freeway (during a blizzard none the less!). I took my X to a auto glass shop but they said where was nothing they could do (the windshield is not cracked, just pitted). Normally I would not care too much, but the pit is right in front of my face while driving.

The pit is about 1.5mmx1mm and about 1/32" deep (how's that for mixing units?)

Is there some kind of filler, or some way to polish out the pit? Even just a reduction of appearance would be good.

Thanks,

I have seen a repair kit that is supposed to fix them in JC Whitney. I'm not sure if i'd trust it though....i dont' know never tried it, never heard of anyone trying it. That's all i've heard of though...

Good Luck

There are companys around here that will come to someones house and repair something like you have. I have seen them do it. They suck out the air in the bad area and repair it. They do a nice job. Most all the ones I called them for (when I had my shop) they repaired. The only thing that I noticed is that when it rains the wipers don't seem to clean that area as well. Seems to leave a little water on that area.
So I would have to say YES it can be repaired good enough to get by with. I have seen repair kits for sale but can't remember where. Worth a shot. Worse comes to worse get a used windshield.

I just repaired a small crack and pit caused by a rock when my wife had my X.

At just about any autoparts store (got mine at murray's) they have the widow kit. I can't recall the brand at the moment.

It worked great on mine. it has a syring with some sort of epoxy that cures under UV light. You put it on the window with a suction cup and pull back on the plunger to remove the air. Then when you let go it pushes the epoxy into the chip.

You let it cure in the sun for about 30 min. then use the included razor to shave off the excess. If it's cloudy you may want to get a UV light.

I tried those, double_take. They work great but if the damaged area is in your line of vision its not a good idea. It'll be too distracting. It will come out clear in color but it won't be clear enough that you could see through it. Most glass place could do this for about $25. To replace the whole windshield cost $125 around here.

Check with your insurance company.
I got a stone chip fixed for free. ( Progressive )

If I don't show you where it is, you'll never see it.

Yep, you might be covered and not even know it. I know I was for 5 years and didn't even know it until the day I cancelled my full coverage and went with liability only. It was only $25 per six months on top of my premium.
