Plastic Pieces on the oil filter, Please Help

it shows like it always did ( ON ) , i wanted to know if u have the dreaded chain rattle usually which chain guide or tensioner to look for before i tear into this.

was this specific engine in the OP's initial post making any noises that would indicate such a failure of said timing components?

The engine sounded loud at idle when it was cold. Almost like a bunch of clicking valves. Once the car warmed up it was definately quieter, but you could still hear it.

I think there is also some kind of exhaust leak on the pass side by the cat so that was interfering. I couldn't really pin the noise down to any particular part of the engine. But I'm afraid of what the others look like.

I'm heading out on vacation so it will be a while before I get the engine out. But I will post up some pics of what the stuff looks like when I get it appart.

The truck is a 4x4.

Is there a nice sticky with pictures on how to replace these? I did a search and didn't find much. I'll keep trying though.

So I guess I'll be pulling the motor to get these things fixed. Not really what I wanted to do, but I guess its better than destroying the engine.

EDIT: Ok now i read somewhere that you don't need to pull the engine for the 2002+ to change the tensioners. Now I'm really confused.

You don't need to pull the motor but you will have to slide the transmission back to get the bolt out of the rear timing guide

You don't have to pull the engine but you will have to slide the transmission back to get the bolt out of the rear timing guide. The bolt that holds the timing gear to the camshaft is left hand thread also
