Please help! Brake lights out!

All 3 brake lights out

I have a similiar problem, all 3 of my brake lights are out, I did a little voltage and fuse checks today, and put a short jumper wire on the connector at the brake pedal switch and the lights lit up.

So, I have power to the fuse block, power to the switch, thinking the switch might be bad, if so, how would I remove the switch from the brake pedal?

It's a 1999 explorer sport.
Thanx

If you have power to the switch, but no power out of the switch, and the brake lights work when you jumper the apropriate pins, then yes, you can safely assume it's the switch.

Removal is easy: Unplug the harness, remove the hitch pin that holds the mounting pin in place, remove the pin that slides through it, and it should fall right off. Installation is just the reverse.

The hardest part of the job is contorting yourself up under the dash... I've always found it easier to move the seat all the way back, then literally lay on the floor with my feet out the door. A milk crate or 5 gallon bucket to rest your butt on is a nice bonus if it's available.

Re: Thanx..

Thanx for the info, Your're right about laying on the floor/ground, awkward position to work about, sorta like putting a stereo in a car!1
I removed the hair clip pin, I see the other part is welded to the brake pedal arm, there must a sleeve which this switch slides onto, hence the hair pin.

I jumped the 2 pin connectors and yes all 3 lights came on, will try again in the morning..

so did that end up working? I have the exact same issue right now. I also have another problem - If its night time, I can see even with my car off and keys out of ignition, the rear top brake light is light and flashing very dim and fast, and if i unlock any door on the car, it blinks slower(about 12 times per second as opposed to about 40 times per second). It seems this is somehow linked to my alarm system.... I have a 98 explorer sport.

any update/ideas?

Edit was for spelling. w00t.
