hey guys,

some thing happened yesterday while driving my 99 xlt 4.0 ohv. I heard/felt a significant clunk. and now While driving, the car feels like its fighting something to drive forward as if the E-brake were engaged or something(which is not the case. I checked that) additionally while in gear if I turn my wheels either left or right to their limits the engine stalls out. also, after driving, when I put the vehicle in park and shut it down it jumps forward slightly.

Any ideas???

Not sure if its the transmission because even though it feels like something is trying to keep the car from moving, the tranny still shifts and down shifts through all gears pretty smoothly.

Check the T-case fluids. Look for copper or plastic bits, or burned fluids.

Check the diff fluids, look for metal shavings/bits or burnt fluids.

Check your drive shafts, look for broken U-joints.

Let us know what you found, if anything. We can go from there.

My guess is the transfer case.

thanks for the input guys.
the u-joints all look intact.
how would I go about checking the fluid in the differentials and the transfer case?

Transfer case and differential should have fluid up to the fill plugs.

ok, so heres an update. its definately the transfer case, there is a wirign hrness with a plug that goes to the transfer case. i disconnected that plug and all previous symptoms have stopped.

now, what should i do from here? diagnose and fix my tx case or go to a junkyard and get a used one?

also is it bad to drive without i connected for en extended period of time?

Glad to hear you found the culprit. Having the connector unplugged should not do any harm. However, driving the vehicle with a known problem could further damage the tcase.

This may sound obvious and dumb, but is the 4wd selector knob possibly turned to 4x4?
