Ok i know this kid who is going to change his oil but doesnt exactly know where the filter is and/or what it looks like. Sheesh..damn youngins. I tried telling him myself because i know of course, duh, but he doesnt believe me and wants to hear it from you guys. Oh yea hes got a 97 sport. anyone got some pics??
Also hes not entirely sure on the procedure....
Remove filter, oils pours out, replace new filter, fill up with new oil??
He thinks this is it but is just double checking to make sure.

You guys can just post replies here and ill go tell him.

Oh yeah and sorry if this has already been covered.
I told him to go search but he said he couldnt find any of these basics.

Thanks

1.) Take the oil plug out and let it drain into a bucket or some sort of container.
2.) Screw off the oil filter and dump the oil into a bucket/container.
3.) After oil is all drained out of the pan, put the oil plug back on.
4.) With the new oil filter, take your finger and dip it into the bucket/container you dumped oil in and rub your oily finger on the seal of the new filter so that it's completley "oiled". This is for proper seal.
5.) Screw back on the oil filter.
6.) Pour in the required amount of oil.

PEACE

Can't really describe it being you would have no idea what I'm talking about hahaha plus I'm not very descriptive. I suggest you go buy one of those mechanic manuals. They have GOOD pictures and descriptions. Also it can tell you the suggested oil viscosity and amount to use. ;)

Honestly man, go to Jiffy Lube and watch them do it first, then you can do it everytime afterwards. If you dont know where the oil pan and filter is you could be in a little trouble. I really think it would be worth your while to watch it done first rather than looking at pictures or getting a description from anyone.

If you have a SOHC I will go outside and take pictures for you, let me know.

XplorerKid - The "friend" thing was basically a joke. Ive asked dumber questions that how to change oil and am not ashamed.

nweibly- i gots the OHV. thanks anyway bro

GaSouthern1 - ive watched someone change the oil on my pathfinder a while back so i know the basic procedure i think. I just wanted to check and make sure i knew exactly where the filter was, because i remember seeing a couple different things under my X that look like filters in random and wierd locations.

The oil filter is going to be the metal, cylindrical thing sticking out of the passenger side of your engine. Just follow the procedure 98Explorer4X4 gave above and you should be fine. Just make sure you have what you need before you begin: oil, oil filter, filter wrench, drain pan, jack w/stands or ramps to raise the vehicle, and the proper size wrench for the drain plug.

THE #1 THING TO REMEMBER HERE IS: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START THE VEHICLE WITHOUT VERIFYING THAT THE DRAIN PLUG IS INSTALLED, THE FILTER IS INSTALLED, AND THE OIL LEVEL IS BETWEEN THE MARKS.

When you are done, start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes, then cool down........then double check the oil level. It will probably have gone down a little because the oil filter has filled with oil. Add more oil if needed.
