Ive got a 99 eddie bauer edition explorer. Ive had a aftermarket head unit in it for a few months, but it was older and the diode went out on the radio. before there was no sound issues with it at all. a few days before it went out, anything that was high volume would sound like it was shorting out the system and just sound like static. I reinstalled my factory radio, only to find out it did the same thing, unless every time i started my car, i reached behind the center counsel and pressed the button that had a picture of a headphone and speaker on it. then the sound would sound clear as a bell. I then bough a new Eonon d1202 radio, and installed it. I love the radio, but it is still making the same sound at medium to high volume.

Ive tried replacing speakers, and checking connections of wires, the only thing i can think of is when i installed the new wiring harness, there are two plugs from my factory harness that dont plug into anything. Any Ideas?

Do you have the stock speaker amplifier in the back? (Its in the rear passenger side cargo panel) Theres 1 for door speakers, and if you have a stock subwoofer, than theres one for that too)

My 92' did the same thing when I installed my Sony HU. It sounded like poo-poo when it was above listening level, because of the stock amp. Once I bought the harness and bypassed the amp, I had great clean sound.

yes, it had the 8 inch sub in the back, which was blown so i took that out as well. Can i just leave that unplugged or do i need to buy some kind of eliminator kit or something?

Well check and see if there are TWO amps back there. Unless they sometime merged to only one amp, you probably have two.

alright, ill have to check when theres light out tomorrow. either way, is there a elimination kit that i would have to buy or is there a certain way to do it?

It might be the rear seat control that has decided to go intermittent. It happened to my 98 - open and close a door and the sound would go out. Open and close again and the sound would come back on. Traced it to a short in the control board. I cut the wires to the rear controls and spliced them for a direct connection to the speakers. I don't like the rear controls anyway. The wiring for the rear speakers goes to the rear control unit, then out to the rear speakers.

UPDATE:

I think it does have something to do with the rear audio set up, for now I just unhooked the rear speakers and it sounds crystal clear again. When I've got the time I'll try some of the suggestions mentioned above. Thanks to everyone who tried to help me out with this issue.
