- 2003 ford explorer 4.0
hi,I've been browsing thru the forums and love the help and advice, howerver i'm having a new problem.
my 2003 ford explorer xlt 4.0 v6 114,000 miles just developed a problem
the rear end just started making a sound everytime i accelerate i hear like a grinding sound it starts at about 45mph and then is quiet at 60mph.
it sounds like: whom,whom,whom,whom,whom.
I lifted her up on a lift and the rear driver side cv axle was spewing grease all over the inner rim.....so I replaced that axle along with bearing, hub and both rear pads and rotors.
took her out for a ride and still the same thing.
now I lifted it up again and had my wife step on the gas and i noticed that the driver rear wheel locks up while all the other 3 keep on spinning also i hear a noise by the driveshaft (rear) and when inspecting that area its all dry and the shaft is all rusty and pitted looking.however it does not move when checking for u-joint play,so i ruled that out what has me still stumped is why that rear driver wheel locks up even with a new cv axle.went to ask a mechanic friend and he told me to replace the new axle (that was bought at autozone) also when highway driving at 50mph i shifted into neutral to see if i still hear the scraping/grinding and it seems to get lower like its almost gone while letting it just coast i rev the engine to see if it returns and nothing i put it back in drive and as soon as i touch the gas pedal there goes that friggin rubbing sound again. i dont know if both are issues are related i'm stuck scratching my head..I checked rear diff fluid and it was good but decided it was time for a change anyway so i swapped it out with some mobile 1 synthentic 140 and friction modifier and still the same friggin noise.
if any one can please chime in and help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
i'm ordering a new axle from dearborne axle.but hoping someone might catch something that i am missing.thank you all
