I have a 97 4.0 ohv, I have changed the plugs in it twice and about 2 weeks later it will go back to missing when i am in the gas. It was throwing a lean code so I cleaned the Maf and did a tune up,that got rid of the code, now it keeps doing this. Any help???

less the wires are on the exhaust manifold, or junk wires, its probably not the wires at fault.

What plugs and wires are you putting in, and what are the plugs gapped to?

What makes you think the wires are the problem?

I fixed 2 misfires on cars at work in the last 3 weeks that had new wires, but the connector on the plug end was partially pulled out of the boot. In both cases, the owner plugged them in but didn't hear a click, pulled the boot off by pulling the wire, tore the end off and then tried to put them back together- but didn't get it quite right. The connector inside was laying sideways in the boot only touching the end of the plug, thus the misfire. Both sets were the inexpensive $20 wires from Autozone. Being that they were pulled off a few times in the install/reinstall scenario, I'm just wondering if it could be something related to wires...

...or did you mean the OP? :D

If one replaces the same part over and over yet gets the same results, one might think that's not the cause of the problem.

A lean code is usually intake manifold gaskets, very common with our trucks.
A misfire under load is usually associated with a weak spark.
Check spark plugs, wires and ignition coils.

To those who assume i thought the wires are at fault, I don't. The only reason I have replaced them the second time is because they have a lifetime warranty and I hate a miss. And telling me that "the wires are not the problem'' is not helping me at all. And the lean code is no longer and issue, so no it is not an intake gasket. What I have narrowed it down to is the coil or spark plug out of adjustment. But seriously guys if you are not going to offer a solution or at least a half attempt diagnoses don't reply, got plenty of uselessness i have to deal with on a daily basis. But to those who did offer a valid cause, they're not on the manifold, the wires aren't a cheap set, i'm pretty sure all the plugs are gaped correctly. I am probably going to test the coil and see what the verdict is. I'll keep you posted.

Oh, and keep in mind that the engine will not miss at all for about 2-4 weeks after changed, and after that only misses on acceleration and has very slight rough idle.

a lean condition can cause a miss.

so if you have a p0171 p0174 i would say intake side of the engine is lean.

a miss fire can cause a lean condition but, that would affect the o2's where you get o2 indicates lean.

my best guess is you are resetting or disconnecting the battery, which puts the vehicle into relearn, after you do each set of wires. and it takes by your driving style that long for the odb monitors to kick in and set it as lean/miss.

it doesn't have any codes
