98 ford explorer
i have a 98 explorer 5.0 AWD,with the dis ignition system,lately on cylinder no 3 ,it burns off the plug wire insulation,any ideas what could cause this?coil?even does the ford plug wires like this.thanks

Check for contact with the exhaust manifold. There should be heat shields on wires going to cylinders 3 and 4, exactly for this purpose.

You are missing the little plastic clips that hold the wire in place, away from exhaust.
 






heat shield are on the plug wires,and no it does not have the front plug wire separators,but ,the wire is run differnt than the others where it can not touch the manifold,it burns the rubber off inside the heat shield,only does it on cylinder 3.

Exhaust manifold gasket could be blown or cracked manifold leaking on to the plug wire too. Check for and signs of black carbon around there. Exhaust manifold issues are pretty common.
 






thanks for the reply,it definitely needs a manifold,i have one to go on it,i suspected this might be the problem,if thats not it ,im lost as to what it could be.
