Plugged cat?

Today I may be going to look a 94 that is for sale, the people who are selling it say the cat is plugged because it has a poping sound when driving it, at idle it does not pop. If I go to look at this rig I have to drive about 80 miles and want to be prepared for things to look for for this condition, I have had my exhaust before on my 91 and the cat was pretty open and free flowing, if it is not a plugged cat was else? what I like about this explorer is, it is a base model border patrol rig with manual hubs,transfercase and transmission I am going to be getting the axle code before I head down hopefully 3.73 l/s

If it really is a plugged cat, your cordless sawsall will make short work of that!

Normally a cat will plug because the ceramic material inside breaks apart and falls to block the passages. Sometimes you can crawl under and give it a few good whacks with a rubber mallet or wood block and hear the ceramic moving around. You could move it enough to temporarily unblock it, but at the same time could make it worse. I think the cordless sawzall is a good idea if you intend to drive it that far.

I have a car trailer for my rig collecting, I just dont to drive down there and find out it is something other than a plugged converter

A popping sound could be caused by many different things. Impossible to diagnose, though, until you look at it.

I say if the price is right, go for it. Not many stock all-manual Ex's out there, in any condition.
