Ok Jim,

One last time. There is an ONP for 97-98 Exploders numbered 00M12. Ford will do it for free if you have less than 72,000 miles and 6 years on your truck. For Ford to do the job they must also verify the problem exists on your truck. Otherwise it costs about $400 for Ford to do it. Or $50 for the parts if you want someone else to do the job.

Good Luck,
mikeh

Sorry, I didn't decipher that from your earlier thread.....DOWP!

But, thank you for restating it. I'm sure future readers will appreciate it, also. I have 83kmi, but we'll see if I can make 'em an offer they can't refuse to do the work for FRE-FRE-FREEEEEE. He He ;)

Oh and for you guys who are wondering how long you can go with that noise, here's the scoop. If you are getting that noise now, that means that the chain is not in proper tension or alignment. Driving easy thinking it will put the problem at bay longer won't do jack.....it's already loose. The end result could possibly be that the cam chain binds up ('cause it'll be loose) breaking the camshaft.

Translation, local junk/scrapyard gets your engine. GET IT FIXED ASAP!

Thanks,
Jim

Quote from Ford's letter to the dealer "The condition of either or both of these components will not cause engine damage or failure, but may decrease the customer's satisfaction with their vehicle." Even with loose tensioners, the chain should not have enough slack to cause damage (according to Ford). Take it for what it's worth.

This is in contrast to ONP 01M01 where if the camshaft chain guide breaks and falls apart in the engine which can cause engine damage.

BTW I had 20K hard miles on my rattling tensioners without any hints of problems.

GOOD INFO.....PLS READ

I just got back from the Ford dealership. They took down my mileage and looked up my Vin to check it against open recalls and programs.

The open programs I can recall from memory include throttle plate, cam tensioner/guides, and something to do with the pistons...yikes...didn't ask. They did give me a, "well the program on your cam tensioner and guides is till open, however..." Then I cut him off and said, "but I'm over the mileage, huh?"

Then I proceeded to tell them how much I love my Explorer and might have cried poverty a little. :p Mentioned that I was a member of an online Explorer Board that had 10k members and that I'd be reporting my experience back to them as there were several members with the same problem.

OHHH LOW AND BEHOLD........the service manager told me that the service dept can make a couple calls to the Ford program center and get an overwrite for my non-qualifying higher mileage Explorer and thanked me for choosing Ford! READ THAT AGAIN!

The appointment is for Monday AM, and they will update my truck with all of the open programs for FREEEEE!! Now THAT is awesome service right there!

Did I mention EXPLORERFORUM 4EVA!? :smoke: :D

Wow are you sure you went to a Ford Dealership Stomper? :D

Congrats.

stomper keep us informed of the work done

Work is Complete!

Okay, here goes...

I picked up my X yesterday from the local Ford dealership after having it for 3 days. First I must say that these guys in the service department here must be the greatest ever!

They did the computer diagnostic recall.

They did the throttle body plate recall.

They did the cam chain tensioner recall with everything that went along with that.....FREE.....under warranty.

And, while they were at it, I think they accidentally damaged the threads on my cylinder heads while getting them off, so for the sake of speed they just put two NEW head assemblies on! AWESOME! I must have a horseshoe up my ass or something! :p

I mean it was a real pain not have a vehicle for 3 days, but they agreed that the recall work should be done under warranty even though I was outside the mileage requirement because it's a well known recall and something that shouldn't be a problem. A friend of mine in NJ has the "diesel" sound, so I recommended he go get his done. The dealership by HIM said tough ****.....you're over the mileage limit (he drives alot and has 90kmi) and there is nothing they could do. MAN THAT'S CRAP!

But, I am very lucky that the guys here gave me practically a new engine and did what they had to do internally to cover it, whether they fudged something or got the recall overwritten (I thought I heard that term) with a couple phone calls.

It runs and sounds just perfect, and to show my appreciation I brought over a card for the service manager and a couple large pizzas.

GREAT! I'm glad that Ford dealer made good. You missed your car for 3 days, I've been without mine for a WEEK while they fixed the blend door problem (put in the wrong part the 1st time). Just got it back today! YAY!
