My '97 Ranger recently started making a pop or clunk noise when the brake pedal is pressed down about half way, and also at that point when released. It does it whether the truck is moving, stopped, on or off. I'm pretty sure it's coming from inside the brake booster.
Also, when I come to a stop quickly, or go over bumps, there is a different, metal on metal sounding clank from under the hood. Hard to tell exactly where this comes from.
Could something inside the brake booster have broken off that's causing the spring to pop? And is now rolling and banging around in there? Nothing else with the brakes has changed, like no mushiness, signs of a leaky booster, etc.
