Just wanted to get some opinions on what happend to my Explorer. It is a 00 XLS with the 4.0L OHV and auto trans and 4x4. If I have read correctly this is the 5R55E Transmission? I bought it a month or two ago and while I was going over everything I realized the trans was overfilled, so I drained a little over a pint out of it so it was at the correct level, it had been driving just fine until this weekend I took off from a stop, just as I was turning the corner in 1st gear I heard a clunk or pop. Now I have no forward gears at all, it will just rev up like it is in neutral but reverse works just fine. I am assuming the trans is shot and I will be looking for a replacement or rebuild, wanted to see if anyone had experienced something similar and knows what went wrong and what would have caused this. Thanks

I agree, it sounds like a trans issue... busted band on one of the clutches I suspect... Unfortunately I can't tell you which one... Auto transmissions are a big gray box to me!

I'm sure the trans gurus will be along shortly...

My 1991 did the same thing minus the "POP" it just quit one day. $1350 later I got it all rebuilt with heavier duty parts. The shop told me it was waisted inside. planetary gears, bands, etc.

Basically what I was expecting to hear, thought it was strange that there was no warning at all, no flashing O/D light like so many people have had. Anyone else have any similar experiences? time to begin the junk yard search...

Yea, mine drove great right up till I tried leaving the bank parking lot one day, no noise no warning, no forward gear, I backed out of the parking spot and that was it. I was however able to back it back into another spot while I waited for a tow.
