I apologize if this is in the wrong thread, I am new to this. I have axle code 46 on my truck (2001 sport trac). And would like to lock it, I don't know how to weld. Any help on how i can go about this?

First of all I'd say this is the correct forum, welcome! But as far as your question. If you want a welded diff I would go to a mod shop and pay someone to do it because its something you obviously dont want to mess up, just have a professional do it for you. That would be my friendly suggestion.

If I have some one weld it will it squeel? I have heard people say that.

Check Youtube for installation videos

1. It shouldn't squeal. If you do it right it should be fine. I would not have the person who said that do it for you.
2. I would go ahead and look into that Spartan Locker. That seems like a good idea. Nice, simple, and it looks to be removable if you don't like it. So my current suggestion would be to go with that.

Thank you, I'll save a little and go for it

If you're going to save some money, I suggest you save enough for a locker, or limited slip, and forget about welding, if you drive on the street at all.
I suggest you search and read up on what exactly the differences are between a limited slip, a locker, and a welded diff. From your posts, it sounds like you think they are all about the same thing, only one is cheaper (welded).

I wouldnt weld your spider gears together. You can get an Aussie locker that will work just fine for $250. I would rather do it right and know that if something breaks on the trail I can at least try to fix it. Like RangerX said, if you drive on the street at all, you'll regret welding.

The squeal you've been told about is probably the tire scrub you'll get on the street if you make sharp turns.

You'll probably get some tire squeal with any locker, maybe even the factory limited slip, especially on a hot, humid day.

If you lean on the throttle in a tight turn, the Spartan will lock and chirp the tires.

Yup and same with my Aussie locker. Any of the auto lockers will do that.
