Hey,
I'm a new member; today I purchased a '97 Ford Explorer XLT edition for a very reasonable price.
I test drove it for over an hour, everything was perfect; inside and out immaculate.
The breaks squeaked just a little bit. But over the course of the drive it stopped.
My only concern was a part of the A/C equipment under the hood (I still purchased it; knowing the A/C blew for well over an hour during our drive, but this could become a problem in the future)
the owner informed me that anywhere from 6-9 months ago, he had to change the "condensor" as his A/C started blowing warm.
When i looked under the hood.
Their is a small pipe that goes into this "black box" (plastic) and then it comes out and hooks up to what looks like where the freon is stored. (this is really cold after running the A/C).
What was funny and embaressing (for him) was where the pipe that hooks into the "black box" (left hand side near winsheild under hood) their was a dry dirty napkin (literally) around it. That from what i could tell after fiddling with it a little was their to just help it fit better.
I spoke with my dad prior to purchasing and told him that was my only concern (and the owner). My dad told me in the past (old skool) people used to wrap a cold napkin around these pipes if their A/C wasn't working propertly, but in this case, it IS most likely for a better fitting. But it still means their is a certain peice missing. He said mostly a rubber or foam mount of some sort.
He said their is definitely no guarantee. But if the A/C blew it blew. I was able to negotiate a better price. But living in Florida is definitely a concern if the A/C stops working. The owner seemed honest enough, he even tried to take me to the mechanic's shop who did the work for him although it was closed.
I brought the car and took the risk.
I know the explanation probably isn't the best. But if you have any idea what im talking about. please let me know. for the meantime nothing is broken (yet) but once it does i will be screaming hell or high water.
Like my dad said today, dont fix or mess with anything if its working.
Just let it ride. The only thing i would like to do is an oil change (definitely) and possible a tune up. Besides that it ran perfect.
Especially for a car with 130k.
Chris
