2000 Explorer Eddie Bauer
Hey guys,

So I've been having trouble with my Explorer since I bought it a few years ago. It's a 2000 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4x4. 138k 4.0

I'll list the symptoms and see what you guys think. The more I think about it, the more they seem related, but I'm not sure. Could be an issue with the multifunction switch and a few other things possibly. It should probably be noted that the truck has had a dead temp gauge since I bought it, and the PO put on an aftermarket temp gauge that has since fallen off and I don't care to fix.

So, to start off I have a rubbing sound coming from the left side of front axle area. The sound quickens and slows with the speed of the vehicle. I've had the truck in to a 4x4 specialist, and the whole left side was stripped down, and troubleshot with new parts to no avail. Nothing on the end of the axle was making the sound, and the only thing that wasn't checked was the front diff. Does not affect the driving or the 4x4 system as far as I can tell.

The sound is constant, and hasn't changed in the two years I've had the truck.

However, I have several intermittent problems with the truck as well. They all seem to happen together, or not at all.

One of the problems is the front end binding up on concrete when in 2wd for no apparent reason during somewhat tight turns. The binding is often accompanied with a louder rubbing sound.

I have problems with the blinkers not blinking both directions. The light may flash once or twice then stay solid. I can retry the signal, and sometimes it goes back to normal, sometimes it takes a few tries. Does not seem to affect the hazards.

This is accompanied by a loud buzzing from under the steering column, that doesn't seem to be related to anything else. Sounds like the blinker going off 100 times a second, but no light or anything goes off. The sound does not happen while the blinker is on, just intermittently while driving.

Finally, my tach sometimes rises up for no reason. The truck will be idling right around 900-1000 and the tach wil jump up around 2k or 3k and fall back down to idle. The engine has no change when this happens.

The binding, buzzing, blinker issue and tach issue are all intermittent, but all occur at the same time usually. The frequency doesn't seem to increase with amount of drive time or weather.

So, my conclusion is there is some electrical short or a failed component that is causing these issues. Some of the symptoms sound like a multifunction switch, and some don't. I'm hoping some of you gurus out there can lend me a hand.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried removing the front driveshaft? It sounds like the 4wd system is locked, no slippage. Curious if removing the front driveshaft would eliminate the binding action.

I haven't, although that sounds like an interesting idea. However, it should be noted that the front end only binds up when all the other intermittent issues are also preset. Most of the time there is zero binding, just the rubbing sound. Make me think a short or something is telling the hubs to lock then they shouldn't or something.

Any ideas guys? Any other information I can provide for you that will help you?

The buzzing and blinking is probably the multi-function switch (MFS) - a known weak spot on these vehicles.
