2013 Explorer Limited
Hi All-

I just traded in my 2011 Explorer for a 2013 and have had it for 2 days now. Right off the bat I noticed a whining noise during acceleration and coasting which sounds like it's coming from the engine. The best way for me to describe it is when an older car has a power steering issue and when you turn the wheel, that's the noise. I made a point to drive it about 100 miles last night to see if it had to be broken in or something ( I picked it up w/ 10 miles on it) and after about an hour of driving the noise seems to go away. But sure enough I got in it this morning and it was still there. Is something too tight under the hood, does break in need to occur, or am I just over thinking it. For someone who has driven an 2011 Explorer for 18 months, the 2013 definitely does not sound like the 2011. Any thoughts would be great. This is upsetting since this thing is brand new.

Dude? What does that have to do with anything...at all??

Back to the matter at hand...

TripFoeYa, our 2013 has never made any such noises. I think you are over-thinking it a bit :). I recommend taking it back to the dealership so that they can hear it for themselves, and let them fix it.

I plan on giving it a week or so and see how it is. If it continues I have a four day business trip coming up and I'll dropping it off with the dealer while I'm away. If it gets to that let's hope they find something and it gets corrected.

Having been a previous Ex owner, you probably have an excellent perspective as to how the Ex should ride, handle, sound, and feel. If you are not comfortable with your NEW Ex, you need to camp on the dealers door until they make it right. I have a 2012 that I enjoy, but you paid way to much to be questioning your decision. Hopefully you can get Cory involved if your dealer can not help you. Let us know how this works out

I’m glad you’re dropping it off, TripFoeYa; that’s the best way to get the concern resolved. I’m confident the dealer will take care of you.

Thanks for posting the recommendation, VinceL.

I really appreciate the shout-out, mayher. :)

Just to update, I couldn't wait until my trip and decided to call the dealer this morning. I met them and took it for a drive with a tech. Too bad it was raining pretty hard out so it was difficult to hear the full extent of the noise. I told them to keep it until they fully hear it and could possibly start to troubleshoot. My guess is they wait until the morning to listen for it since that's when it seems to be at it's loudest. (Long gaps between drives) I will update once they get back to me. Thanks for the input thus far.

Trade in amount covered the balance of my existing loan. Then financed 100% of purchase price for the 2013. Interest rates were lower than previous loan so I was able to keep my payment about the same. At the end of the day I basically leased my 2011 for 18 months. With X-Plan and $1750 in rebates plus adding the moon roof and tow package to this build I ended up paying less than my 2011.

Sounds like it all worked out nicely for you TripFoeYa. Once you get the little problem taken care of, you are really going to enjoy the 2013, it's a great vehicle

Now, two things need to be taken care of...you need to update your vehicle info in your profile and provide us with some PICS!! :)

Alright, so I heard back from the dealer and they seem to have it fixed. They mentioned there is a service message (not TSB) for 2013 Explorers on my issue. The issue is a steel brake line and transfer cooling line touching. This is causing the rattle noise. They have instructions to separate and secure the lines. I'm having them keep it overnight so they can test it in the morning. I will be back to update tomorrow.

Just to update everyone on my original issue. The vehicle is back in my possession and the issue is completely fixed. It ended up being a steel brake line and transmission cooling line hitting each other during acceleration. A small washer was installed to keep the lines from touching. In case anyone else has this issue the fix covers 2011-2013 models with instructions followed by SSM # 22450.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you were able to get it taken care of so quickly. Happy motoring.

I have a strange and annoying noise that I hear only when I am turning to the right, under acceleration (like an on ramp). I definitely thought it was something like what TripFoeYa described. I could see two metal lines vibrating together to causing this noise.

I have searched for SSM # 22450 and found nothing. Does anyone on here have access to what it says and where I should look for the lines touching?

Mine appears to be coming from the drivers front wheel area, is that where yours was located TripFoeYa?

Guess I will get under there an start looking around...

I would suggest that perhaps you may be better off sending TripFoeYa a private message since the member's last post was in January.

I know its an old post, but it solved my problem so I thought I would give a little more detail.

I spoke to TripFoeYa on the phone and he gave me some more information.

On the drivers side wheel, the brake line is attached to the strut. At this point, the brake line goes from metal tubing (in the engine bay) to a flexible hose (going to the brake caliper).

In the engine bay very close to where the brake line attaches to the strut, another aluminum tube was routed very close to the metal brake line. Not touching, but almost. I didn't notice if it was a cooling line, AC line or what.

I just saw how close they were and gently bent the brake line down about 1/4".

The noises I was having are completely gone!!! So happy thank you TripFoeYa.

When I would turn right under acceleration, like cloverleaf onramps, I would hear a rattle and then whine/moan of the power steering system like it was straining. When I turned I guess the engine shifted slightly causing the brake line to contact the other line, it would rattle at first, then make solid contact and transfer/magnify the power steering whine/moan.

I am very surprised this stopped the whine/moan as I have heard it in other cars (usually turning the wheels all the way in a parking lot). I just thought it was the nature of the EPAS system, although the whine/moan never occured when turning left...

Anyway the rattle and moan are gone. I can enjoy hard mountain road cornering with the radio off!

Jeff, nice to hear you got to the bottom of the issue. I'm glad our conversation helped you out. Enjoy the vehicle. I am loving mine.
