Possible SOHC conversion

I've got the 4.0 EFI, and needless to say, I'm kinda dissapointed with the horsepower on it. I would like to swap it for an SOHC, but my main question is can I use my existing transmission on it? It's relatively new(less than 8k miles), but the motor has over 130k on it. And what parts are NOT compatible with the SOHC? Thanks for the help.

I have the SOHC and I love it... but if you're going through the trouble of a swap, just put in a 5.0 and the auto behind it. The 302 is next to bullet proof and the tranny behind it was the best tranny put in the Explorers. And the 302 also responds well to mods and is heavily supported in the aftermarket.

I guess my only restrictions are cost, I was just hoping to find a decent SOHC in a junkyard and keep as many parts as possible. If I can find a 302 with tranny in good condition maybe I'll go with that.

Yes it is very possible and with your 95 even easier. You'll need a SOHC from a 97 Explorer or the first years. Along with the a/c line, throttle cable, and computer with wiring which should come with the engine, its a very do able swap. And 10 times easier and cheaper then the V8. Yes your trans will bolt directly to the SOHC. Your exhaust will bolt, from the Y-pipe back, to the SOHC. I've done two swaps myself now, one in a 00 Ranger and one in a 93 Ranger and the 00 was just about a plug and play but the pre-94 style is totally different. Did I mention the 93 is Supercharged too?

This may sound dumb, but if you are swapping in a SOHC in for an OHV, aren't all the sensors the same? and in relatively the same locations?

Haven't studied a SOHC in any detail to tell. Don't think the neighbors would be too thrilled to find me under the hood of their Sport Trac.
