After looking to get a reman’d 4.0 ohv for my manual expo that has a bad cylinder, noticed backlog was about 3-5 months out (believe since manual vs auto eng). Most locals didn’t want to do a rebuild.

Decided not to order and then realized the cost of the reman’d unit, plus 10-12 or so hours labor, along with all the new parts to make it legit, was just not worth it for the only 160 or so hp crank all said and done, ok, could have done a cam for a small bump.

So, still researching some ideas.

This week, when reading one of dezertranger’s post, he mentioned the 4.0 SOHC option later on down the road on his build. I had disregarded this option a long time ago because of all the negativity around the timing system and just overall design vs the proven ohv.

The past few days, was reading more into it, and based on all I read, the option is actually a pretty great option, all things considered, and gets me close to the standard 5.0 output (even though still wouldn't have a more robust trans) for a lot less work. Just make sure you have updated timing components and you hopefully get a solid engine to work from of course.

Being I use this as a toy, it’s only used 1-2.5k a year, getting 200-400k out of this engine is not important whatsoever. A reliable 100k is.

That said, few questions remain so I can continue to weigh out what to do, since didn’t seem to locate the answers exactly. Sorry if they’re easily available.

This is for a 4.0 OHV OBD1 convert to 4.0 SOHC OBD1 on a ’92 manual expo:

1: Still best to get absolutely newest, lowest miles SOHC ever made (even if a K VIN number\FlexFuel one), and just grab some non-ethanol based standard injectors for it? Best to get a ranger or mustang SOHC instead of an explorer one, to hopefully get one that's had less workload\heavier usage?

2: To keep my AC, how is this done exactly?

3: Since it’s a ’92, I’m using batch fire injection from the factory. No easy way to get SEFI from my OBD1 system, to get slightly more efficiency\power? Or is that simply moving to a 93\94 PCM? Any injector wiring changes because of this?

4: Seems no one is tuning OBD1 Ford’s these days, that still true? Only ask, so I can get it optimized some to the SOHC, even if it will technically run it just fine.

5: Confirming existing M5OD bolts right up to the SOHC bellhousing? (from what I read, seems it does) Is there a difference in getting a manual\auto based SOHC engine or no difference on this one? (Mine is fully rebuilt, and wouldn't want to buy the newer and greater M5OD-HD unit until mine blows, if it does)

6: If no cam sync\sensor used, do we need to run 91 octane by default to compensate for any potential knock?

7: What exactly is needed to be done to my exhaust system to conform to the SOHC engine exactly?

8: What's the extra effort look like to convert this whole setup to OBD2 instead of keeping OBD1, to run this SOHC?

Thanks for the help all!
