After installing my Aussie locker last week I started having some problems a few days after. First I gotta say that I know the ratcheting sound a locker will make when its on a bind or free spinning.. Now, since I said that I am hearing/feeling clicks coming from the rear. I feel them through my seat, which tells me its coming from the back, right? And at times it will literally jerk the truck with a loud bang. I did not use new side gear shims and in a hurry I did forget to loc-tite the center pin retaining bolt.

Feedback, thoughts? Thanks!

Jack

...Clicking, ratcheting, and the occasional big bang I would say are common with a rear locker while on dry asphalt...

...Your driving habits will change...You will use the skinny pedal gentler and roll thru turns without accelerating...I do get an occasional bang that scares the daylights out of me while driving straight in bumper to bumper traffic...:D

...There is a reason for loc-tite and if not used where required, the bolts will back out...You didn't mention where your installation fell within the spec parameters...

...It happens with all rear lockers...;)

...When mine bangs it jerks and I would swear I dropped the rearend off the truck...With the manual tranny in the Ranger, I have gotten it to bang in second and third...The rear end with the soft springs gives a wiggle then too...:D

...This only happens occasionally as I have tried to change my driving habits to not encourage the impact it may have on the wear and tear of the driveline on dry pavement with good tires...Your rear tires will also show some scrubbage on the outer edge as time goes on

...That theory however goes out the window when it rains...:burnout:

...The Aussie locker is a great locker IMHO and the only problems I have read about were do to out of spec installs and not tightening stuff up in the diff...

thats exactly what I am getting.. it scared the daylights out of Beverly when she felt it. w/in the next couple days ill be back in there making sure everythings the way its suppose to be and to loctite the center pin retaining bolt. hopefully I can salvage the fluid.. the lucas gear oil I put it wasnt extremely expensive but still, $25 isnt something I want to waste.

thanks for the feedback! I'm somewhat relaxed now lol

Umm, no bangs here, only clickety clickety in the grocery store parking lot.

Gettin on and off the gas at high speed on slight curve is un-nerving though! From big understeer to big oversteer in a second:eek::eek::eek:

I emailed Aussie and this is what I got back.. thing is, I never received an instruction booklet with the acceptable tolerance, and the write-up I followed never mentioned it.

A bang can occur when the locker is coming out of a turn on the highway and the teeth to do not exactly match up on the reconnect. That is normal. A bang should not happen when you are driving straight on the highway. What was your spacer to cross shaft and the inner-cam measurements on installation? Did you verify that your tires are within 3/8" of each other in circumference at the same air pressure?

Where in WV are you? My Aussie bangs as well, but it's usually coming out of a sharp turn.
