I had the cam tensioner and "O" ring replaced a short time back on my 97 SOHC.

Since then the shift points on the tranmission have changed for the worst. It seems it doesn't know when to shift or how to do it smoothly - on both up and down shifts. It tends to shift out at much higher revs, like it doesn't want to let go to get to the next higher gear. I have to work the gas pedal to make it up shift when and where it should.

It started the day the new tensioner went in.
Anyone have any insight, or is it the nature of the beast after those tensioners go in?

The computer might be off after having the work done. The simplest/cheapest fix is to try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, then take the truck out for a long drive, preferably driving the way you normally do. The computer should relearn how you drive and make adjustments accordingly. If that doesn't work, take it back. I believe the shift points on the tranny can still be adjusted manually?? (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Normal op?

From your description, it sound just like the way mine has shifted since new. It can be nerve racking since I'm used to a manual transmission and when I want to shift down, I have to wait for the tranny to let me or actuate what feels like a switch at almost full throttle. I have a recall for a powertrain reprogram, but am afraid of having it done, it might get worse.

Oh by the way, original cam tensioners and o-rings. So far so good (knock on wood).

Bingo!
TPLYNCH thanks, you hit it right on!
Pulled the battery terminal. waited, put it back on, and drove around. Smoothed right out. Didn't even have to get dirty and used only one wrench! How easy could it get?

Someone else had the same problem after replacing the tensioner but I couldn't find the post. I hope he reads this.
Thanks again
