Picked up the new X yesterday. When we got home I manually closed the power liftgate and it made a whining sound as it went down. Is it safe to do this? Anyways after that i noticed a smell like when your brakes burn. Did me closing the liftgate manually cause this? I think its idiotic if you cant close the liftgate manually.

Hi Morgan, Not to pick on you but didn't you like the answers you got on the Facebook page ;)

I manually close mine frequently when I don't want to wait for the self close.

Morgan1002,

Interesting find. It is a power liftgate so I would strongly suggest using your push button. Because it is powered, my guess is that the noise you heard when you manually closed it was from the force on the track. About the smell, it could be the new rubber grinding on the track, again from the manual close. The power liftgate should be a convenience, since it allows hands-free open/close when carrying arm fulls of grocery or luggage. However, I can understand the need and desire to sometimes just close the thing manually! ;) I hope this helps.

Enjoy your Explorer!

Seni..no worries, Morgan figured out it was the undercoating burning off-not the power lift gate :)
