Operating Liftgate Manually On a Power Liftgate Setup ?

actually your right... it would be pretty much how a garage door opener works.

garage door goes up... you wanna stop the door at half open?... no prob, just press the button again while opening and it stops! yea!

if a cheap butt garage door opener can do it... why not a $30K+ Explorer :D

That's how my tailgate works...... press the button and it starts opening. Press it again and it stops. Press it yet again and it closes.

jrm, are you talking about the interior dash button?

Nope. I can push the exterior liftgate button (on the rear hatch outside) and then stop it using the inside button. Pressing the inside button then closes it.

Just now tested it...in my boxers...in the parking garage...at 2315 hours....

(I do not have a preset height. Mine goes to max, factory height. All the stops below are at or before half way point)

Key fob:
Double press, opens
Double press while opening, stops, stays.
Double press at stopped height, goes down.

Dash button:
Press once, opens
Press again while opening, stops, stays.
Press again at stopped height, goes down.

Rear control:
Press once from handle, opens
Press left button OR handle button while going up, stops, stays.
Press left button OR handle button again, goes down.

Seems strange that the manual doesnt mention that you can stop the tailgate mid open/close. It only says that its direction can be reversed with a single press of the buttons:

Note: The liftgate movement direction can be reversed with a second
press of the instrument panel, or the control button on the liftgate, or a
second double press of the transmitter button.

Okay, now I see the problem. I was wearing boxer briefs. I'll try it again wearing boxers! :D I do have a preset height so I don't know if that makes a difference. I don't think it should.

Worked for me using the fob and the buttons on the tailgate. Didn't try the dash button but I'm sure it works from there too. Nice to know that it stops and doesn't just reverse. Still wondering why they failed to put that in the manual.

I guess this forum should be considered the 2011/12 Explorer Drivers Manual 2.0 (online addition with live chat/support)

Using both these methods, mine just stops and reverses as per the manual which is just fine. I don't really see a need for me to have it stop and stay open part way. This is my fourth vehicle with a liftgate and I have never had a need for it to be only partly open.

update... took my car in for radiator fan and also mentioned the liftgate...

they said it should work as your video shows... they said mine is working as should be when they checked their tech docs. smh

hey thanks for the vid
wish mine did that :(

waiting for cory to respond and i'll take it in.
