Power Steering pulley installer???HELP

I used the autozone power steering pulley puller/installer and it worked fine. But none of the supplied bolts will screw down into the pump shaft to put the pulley back on and this was a brand new installer kit he gave me.. I went to the local hardware to find what bolt size actually screws down in there and the only two that even try to fit are either 3/8 or 10mm both fine and coarse thread. They all go down in there about two thread (wrong size)

But looking at the way the installer works wouldn't the bolt need to be reversed threaded? Cause if you just thread the correct bolt all the way in and turn the installing collar it will just turn the pump shaft. If you then try to hold the threading bolt it will just loosen the bolt. With a reverse threading bolt it would bottom out in the hole and the installing nut would then work, correct? I I've used the power steering pulley installer from autozone before and never had this problem.

Does anyone know the exact bolt hole size and whether or not it's a reverse thread? Or maybe tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong.

I used the AZ rented puller on my last pump change (my 91 continental). I had no problems pulling or installing.

Now, that pump came with a bolt and washers to use to press the pulley on (I didn't use them, as the puller kit worked for me). did you get a bolt and washers?

No, I had another pump laying around. I ended up using a heating method i read about somewhere. It went fairly easily I just had to pull the pump and bracket all the way off to get at it better.

I did come up with another problem. After I got the other one on and went to drive it, it started coming out the little hole on top of the dipstick..Anyone got any idea what causes that?

fluid came out the vent in the dipstick?? about the only thing that can cause that is overfilling for overheating the fluid (it expandes as it heats up).

I suppose a lot of air in the system could cause lots of foaming of the fluid, which may cause some to come out the vent.

Occasionally if I completely lock the steering wheel one way or another it'll spray out of the tube (this is with wheel unlocked, engine turned off). I think you just need to turn the steering wheel lock to lock to try and get any air that may be in the system out. Not sure if that's how you do it, but that's my guess.

thats pretty much how I bled my continental. wheel lock to lock, slowly, and didn't hold it at lock at all. several times back and forth and most of the air was out. over the next couple days or week, it occassionally made noise, but went away quickly. after that, it was quiet again.

I never tried to do a power steering pump, is it hard to do?
What do I need besides basic tools?
Is it attached to anything on the steering box or pitman arm?

The PS pump on the 4.0 is pretty easy to do. It's up high so it's fairly accessible. You do need a puller to get the pulley off. Other than that, just basic tools.

pick up a 3 jaw puller. it is a wonderful tool i got the med sized one. for 40$ life time replacement.. found it's great for tie rod ends on classic cars as well. lol putting headers on a dodge dart with a 360 is a pain..

most 3 jaw pullers will break/bend the ps pulley. need the special ps pulley remover (the pulley has a small groove in it specifically for the puller)

I agree, you need the correct puller since the pulley is only plastic. Most auto store will lend you a puller. Just make sure it's a Ford PS puller.
