Power Window Question

Here's the story:

I got new speakers for my Ex on Friday, so when I was installing them on Friday night I had to take the door panels off, so I checked the Haynes manual and it said step one was to put the windows down and disconnect the battery. So I put the windows down and disconnent the battery. Then I install the speakers. Then I put everything back and get in my car to drive away. All the windows go up except the driver's window. All weekend the drivers window hasn't gone up. This afternoon a friend and I were looking at it and after a very brief looking over, we couldn't find the power window motor.

Now, my two questions are:

What are everybody's ideas about how to get the window to go back up?
Where is the power window motor?

I want to get this fixed by Tuesday if possible (here's why) so a quick response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Mine got stuck down a couple times and all I had to do was remove the door panel and push the up button while I forced the window up by hand.

You may simply have a loose or disconnected wire at the switch. I had the same thing happen on my Crown Vic. Got everything back together and no power window.

Hmm. I guess I'll try that push it up by hand method tomorrow, I got nothing to lose.

And we checked all the wires to make sure they were tight. Oh well, we'll be checking those again soon.

OK, well just to report:

I just went outside and did that force the window up while pushing the button, and that thing wouldn't budge.

Also while out there, I put the front passenger window down about an inch and it wouldn't go back up. This is the first time the other windows have had problems.

If I don't get this fixed soon my parents are going to make me take it to a Ford dealer, and I don't want that, so if anyone's got any miracle suggestions please present them at this time. (I'm also kind of worried about leaving it parked with the window down with aftermarket speakers and HU in there, so that's another reason.) Oh well. Keep the ideas coming guys! Thanks!

Sounds to me like you got some wires discombobulated when you took the panel off. That happened to me with my Crown Vic. I got the wire diagram from my local Ford dealer for free. It took me about 3 hours to go through them all to find the right wire but persistance finally paid off.

window issue

It may be as simple as checking that the plugs that plug into the window switches are pluged in correctly and not loose. I had something similar happen to my car it was the passengers window that would not go up, upon inspection the problem was actually that the drivers side power windows switch had the plug underneath it loose. Its worth a try, check it out.

The passenger side window mysteriously started working again on the drive home. So now the driver's side is the only one to worry about.

Hmmm. I like the idea of checking the plugs better than the idea of going through all the wiring, but I guess they're both going to be necessary. Will check the plugs tomorrow. I already checked the wires right at the actual up/down button, where else should I check them? And if I go to a Ford dealer this week, what should I ask for? Just the wiring diagram for the power windows, or anything in particular?

Yeah, just ask for a copy of the wiring diagram for the power windows. They gave me a photo copy out of their shop manual free.

Hey, just out of curiosity, no one happens to have a wiring diagram for an Explorer that they could e-mail me by any chance, do they? That would make my life much easier.

By the way, not only does the forecast call for sleet, freezing rain, and rain tonight and tomorrow, I'm in a friggin flood watch !!!

I got the diagram yesterday, they just photocopied it out of the shop manual. Thanks for the idea. My window (along with the new speakers that started the whole problem) should be working by Saturday night. Woohoo!!!

And it looks like all the rain/sleet/freezing rain has passed, and I've survived. Now I've just got to deal with temperatures in the lower 30's

Well, the speakers were installed today, and the driver's side window works perfectly.

One problem. I was driving home, listening to music, windows down, I got home, and the passenger window wouldn't go back up. I guess we're starting the whole process over again :fire:

(And tomorrow's chance of rain? 50%)

Yeah. I think I'm going to call a Ford dealer tomorrow though. I don't know, so much working on it and something keeps going wrong. Plus, my parents said that all my windows have to be working by tomorrow night, so I'm kind of in a crunch here between working and writing a 750 word ToK paper

Just double check everything you already did. You had it fixed once. Ford dealer will charge you a fortune. Cant help you with mom and dad or the theory of knowledge. Hope you're still dry.

I know much less about wiring than was probably shown throughout this thread. I can't go back and double check all the work my friend did, and he gave up on the whole window/speaker issue, which pretty much just leaves me out in the cold. (No pun intended.)

the power window motor is attatched to the regulator inside the door. it is quite difficult to see, but you can touch it from one of the access holes on the inner door skin, allowing you to check that the harness plug has not come disconnected. however, your problem does sound like a bad connection at the main switch on the drivers door.

Well I just got back from the Ford place, and it turns out that we were all wrong. The main switch on the driver's side had shortcircuited, which is causing all the problems. Will have another switch on the way from Ford soon, to the tune of $300

300??????? Did you try a junkyard or Torrie at Ford Parts Network???? That seems like a He** of a lot for that switch!!

I'm going to call around a few other dealerships around here and see if that's really what the going price is for one of these master switches. What's the link/phone number for Ford Parts Network?
