Unless you have an eddie bauer, you do not have an external amp. My EB came with an external amp powering a 6" sub included in the premium sound system that FoMoCo put in the explorer. (the sub is in the rear left of the cargo area) If you have an XL or XLT you have the Ford premium stereo but no amp or sub....Nick
You all are right, sorry, all explorers have an amp wich powers the stock speakers, But I think that there is a seperate one wich powers the sub in the Eddie Bauer. Does any one know for sure???
Nick:
My 93EB supplimental audio manual says that the JBL system has one 4x60w amp for the stock speakers (all 8) plus one 85w amp for the subwoofer, this last located in the right rear quarter panel.
Via another post I made here today I am trying to find the 4x60x amp. Do you know where it is at?
nickD,
I have a 95 XLT w/ the premium sound system in it and it has the amp and sub. My neighbor accross the street has a 96 EB and I took a look at his and it is the exact same as mine is.They both have two amps. a little one for the sub and a pretty big one for all of the speakers.
If you find the little amp for the sub(It is right to the left of the sub)There is the other sub(the big one) right next to IT on the left. To get to this; you must take that whole rear right panel off. Hope this helps.

95 xlt

I have a 98XLT that I put together on Ford website. The systems that were available were:
1) a standard cd or cassette. Ouput unknown.
2) a premium sound system which has a cd and cassette in the dash with an option for a cd changer. It also included premium speakers. I believe this systems output was 85 watts.
3) Ford's MACH system which appears to used the same system from the premium sound in-dash & cd changer but it included a sub in the back. Much higher output then the premium system.
I decided on the premium system for my Explorer, but I opted to not have the cd changer. Single cd and cassette in the dash is good enough.
Hope this info is helpful.

91-94 Eddie Bauer Premium Sound w/JBL 6.5" Subwoofer systems have two factory amps behind the right rear panel in the cargo area. (Passenger Side) The amp on the left is for the door speakers, the one on the right is for the sub. (2) amps. Just to clarify your questions - I hope this helps.
