Alright folks, my injectors need replaced so... with that said what do you think..

Should i go ahead and just throw a new motor in, im at 150k miles.

How much would a rebuilt 302 5.0 v8 cost? Vs. a rebuilt 4.0 V6... do any other motors work for my vehicle? It needs more power it's constantly hauling bigger wheels, and 500lbs in audio equipment and my big ass.

Also, how much worse will gas be? What can i do to improve it.

331 crate engine = drool :)

Injectors are not too difficult, not that expensive either.
150K new engine? I would do a compression test on the block you have before you just up and replace it.

Now if you want to replace it you have so many choices.
local machine shop assemble yourself
lacal shop build whole thing
performance crate engine

You plan to do the labor?
I would say for a good basic rebuild ona GT-40 anywhere from $1200-3000 depending on what parts you put in it.

Start shopping :)

I'd like a shop to do it for me, and provide some sort of warranty. My truck enjoys breaking down and I know darn well I'm not knowledgeable enough to do it myself anyway,

Also, 150 on my motor currently in my explorer, not a new one i want to put in

No I meant 150K might be early for a new 5.0L, but I like to run them till they are dead, I was never able to kill a OHV 4.0L, the 5.0L should last as long or more...(250K)
Compression test will tell the real story.

sorry your 95 has the OHV 4.0L. You need more then just a 5.0L engine to put in there, you need an entire 5.0L drivetrain conversion.

$$$$$$$

Speaking of killing 4.0's. My friend just killed his 4.0 OHV, he let a water pump leak go, ran it hot while towing...and you can guess...warped those heads as fast as you can say a 4-letter word. I think a 93 Ex has aluminum heads...isn't that right? That would explain it. Heh, so now I have access to a 93 XLT with matching interior (as my truck), gears, etc. I can get parts from.

I'd say expect to spend upwards of 6k for the entire swap with a warranty. You can pick up a 96-97 for that much and just put all your stuff on it. The only thing that would such is losing that badass paintjob.

BTW, I had over 300k original miles on my 92 4.0 and couldn't kill it. I dogged the HELL out of it too. Leaked oil like a biatch, and with 3.27 gears I got almost 330 miles to a tank of gas.

Alright guys, so what about a more efficient V6? Or heck should I just keep the 4.0 V6 in it. I mean I'd like to put a new motor in it, as I am about to go to college and won't have time to mess with the motor and it breaking down.

I'd just rather replace it now and not have to worry about it, then go to college and my only means of transportation die on me.

How much for just the replacement 4.0 ohv, do any other motors work without changin the drivetrain, etc.

(im not a mechanical guy so much as an electrical guy)

well if you are an eletrical guy, this swap will be cake. The mechanics you can learn pretty quick, if you reaserch, and reasearch, and research, until your eye balls burn from the monitor glare.

ive never done it

but as far as pricing... a 4.0 block would cost about as much new, as a whole 5.0 drivetrain out of a wrecked, donor vechical would be.

also

quality 4.0 rebuild with OEM parts = $2000

quality 5.0 rebuild with OEM parts = $600

thats if you do it yourself...

You can go pull a low mileage OHV 4.0L from a later model truck for $3-500, drop it in and go another 200K

Or since your OHV only has 150K on it. Tune it up, take care of it and watch as it lasts another 100K easy. The worst tey usually ever need (as long as they are not overheated as stated above) is new gaskets fromt he lower intake up, re seal the injectors and clean everything up. these engines are workhorses and are built to last a long time. When maintained they will.

Wait a minute...so you are saying that the only thing wrong with your 4.0 OHV is that the injectors are worn out?

New injectors = cheap. New engine = not cheap. New truck = not cheap.

Well maybe i will second think a new motor... If you say it is relaible enough to be my daily driver to work and college.

Thanks guys

P.S. why is it that they made the transmissions so unreliable?!?!

the transmissions are not unreliable
the problem comes when they are not maintained properly and/or overheated.
Of course auto transmissions also wear out with miles, but a fluid and filter change at suggested intervals will really pro-long the life.

Now they are the weakest part of the drivetrain yes, and they get a bad wrap for sure. But mostly the un-reliable parts comes in to play once they are rebuilt. The rebuilders are at fault here.
A good rebuild should last as longand perform as well as the factory unit.

It is true they are light duty transmissions being asked to do alot, and other manufacturers have stout automatics, they just happen to be our weakest spot in the v6 drivetrains.

You dont need a new engine until your engine either quits or loses its efficiency
