First off, the problem I'm having with my stereo is one speaker randomly not working. I have not yet been able to reproduce the problem, it just happens randomly.

My equipment is the standard HU with 2 Kicker CVR 10's and a Sony Xplod xm-1252GTR amp.

The speaker that goes out is always the same one. I had the sub box and amp installed by Circuit City because I had never messed with this stuff before. I have taken it back to them and they claim they can't do anything because the 3 times I've taken the truck there the problem wouldn't occur. The stereo did get to a point a few weeks ago where both subs would go out together. It was at this time I decided to try to have a look at the wiring myself.

The only problem I ran across was the fuse "box" under the hood between the battery and the amp had one side melted pretty bad. I bought a new one, cut the old one out and cut off the burnt wire and reconnected it all how it was except this time using a 50 fuse rather than the 40 CC installed. This time I also used some 550 cord to keep the box away from hot objects rather than let it float around freely under the hood (which I assume is what caused the melting).

After doing that I was back to the one lone sub going out randomly still. Note that they have not both gone out together since then. A guy from a local audio shop suggested I may not have the right amp for the speakers I use and that may be the problem. He suggested I bridge the amp and if it blows a fuse I have the wrong amp and if it doesnt, "rock on". I got a 2nd opinion on this idea and tried it out. For about a half a song it would sound great then all go out, yet not blow any fuses. So I unbridged it and figured I had indeed bought the wrong amp. My only problem wiht this "wrong amp" idea is that it certainly worked well for about 8 months before it went "wrong".

So here I am now with one sub still randomly going out. Can anyone give me an idea of what to check or look for or do I indeed have the wrong amp?

Mine did the same thing...check the all of the speaker connections and wiring

Circuit City sucks at installs anyways and they charge out the ass

it can quite possibly be that the amp itself is getting to hot and going into limp mode untill it cools down, and i have seen certain amps do this only for certain channels not the whole amp. also make sure your amp has an adequate ground because if not that will also cause it to go in and out. maybe you loaded the truck up and something knocked the ground loose, maybe? :dunno:

i agree with trebor. another thing is that you might want to check all connections between amp and subs, including any in-box connections you may have.

Luckily I didn't have an HU installed by them.

I'll go from battery to box and make sure everything is tightened down again.

Another thing to note is this seems to only happen when I have the volume up somewhat high, or maybe its just that I always have it high if its on.

Thank you all for the replies.

I mean actually take the speakers out and check the connections there

I took the one that keeps going out, out of the box the first time i decided to check it all myself and it all looked ok then.

It rained yesterday so I didnt get a chance to go through it again yet and depending how long my card game is today I may not get to it till Monday.

The ground was ran under the carpet underneath the back seat and somewhat exposed. I'll try to get a pic up shortly.

so from what i gather it seems to me that your amp is clipping causing the sound to go in and out intermitenly, having the gains set to high on your amp and inadequate settings on your head unit aswell will cause this.

try turning the gains down on the amp itself, and see if u can adjust the outputs from your headunit to the amp... as in the high and low pass filters aswell as bass boost. and or level inputs.

after you do all that see if it still clips in and out, if it does then check your ground and make sure its of adequate size and rating for the amount of power your running.

CPR on old thread...

I'm still having this problem. I've checked all wires to and from everything. They are all secure and without tears.

Today on my way home from work I got barely out of the parking lot and the one sub went out. In case noone reading this reads my first post, I have the standard HU for an EB X. Prior to today, if I kept the volume at 20 or below the sub in question would never go out. Today, it did. I went the entire way home (35 min drive) with it being out except for once when a song ended and another began the sub came back for the begining of the next song then went out about 20 secs into the song again. When I got home I turned the truck off long enough to come inside and change clothes then went back outside to bang my head against it some more. The sub was working again. Now, try as i might, I cannot get the sub to go out again. I have the volume as high as it can go but the sub will not go out now. Any time I'm driving somewhere and I turn the volume high it immediately goes out.

A few questions I have now are,

Does my not having the truck turned on now have anything to do with the sub not wanting to go out now? Why?

The CC guy that installed seems to have used my factory amp for the factory sub which was blown long ago to power the back door speakers in the truck. Is that a problem related to my sub issue?
